Austin means the world to us. It's where Neha grew up and where both of us went to school and met. Over the years, we've each found some of the spots in the city that make us the happiest. If you're new to Austin and have some time to spend, consider checking out some of our favorites:
My family's favorite breakfast tacos! Before we started dating, Rey and I had a Wednesday morning tradition of Tacodeli and chai in my apartment courtyard before class. My favorites are the Freakin Vegan and the Jess Special.
Excellent vegan Japanese food - the sushi and the tofu katsu curry are stellar.
A beautiful rooftop bar and lounge overlooking Lady Bird Lake. Perfect spot to watch the sunset with a cheeky cocktail, or to share a pitcher with friends.
Coffee at Merit, Houndstooth, or Sa-Tén
Much of my college days were spent cafe-hopping for a change of scenery while studying. These are a few of my favorites!
The best fast-food veggie burger you'll ever have. No Austin trip of mine is complete without one. I'm still petitioning for them to expand to NYC.
Pasta food truck that is way better than it sounds. Delicious food, great outdoor seating space, and a cool bar next door if you want to grab a drink with your pasta.
Winter doesn't really mean much in Austin, but on a particularly cold night it's fun to make your own s'mores at the table.
Cafe by day, bar by night with cute outdoor seating and frequent evening events.
Cute downtown cafe and beer garden with a huge backyard. Perfect for coffee and breakfast or an afternoon lunch or beer. Make sure to try the cauliflower tots.
If you've heard of Uchi or Franklin's BBQ, this patio restaurant is a cool collaboration between the two. Delicious Japanese-BBQ fusion with some exciting vegetarian options.
A chill cafe that transitions from coffee to wine as the day goes on. Great vibes, great drinks, and wonderful live music some nights from local Austin performers.
Long-standing East Austin backyard restaurant perfect for an easy brunch. I've always loved their sandwiches and burgers.
If you want to get outside, this is the easiest way to go on an easy or challenging hike. There won't be much water in December, but the trails are just as pretty.
I used to drive here many mornings at 6 AM to get in an early morning climb and workout. You can of course go at more reasonable hour. Super beginner friendly climbing gym with a huge weight room, yoga classes, and lots of space upstairs to relax.
An amazing plant shop on the East Side. Was always one of my favorite places to walk with a friend and enjoy the beautiful outdoor space.
Chipotle on steroids. Best burritos in the world, with four different flavors of tortilla (you can even do half and half) and incredible ingredients.
