Our Story

June 11, 2018: The Day We First Met

It was a gloomy Monday morning, and 80 people crammed into a conference room to attend a weeklong orientation brief for people who had just arrived at Yokosuka. Nelson and May unknowingly sit next to each other. May's phone buzzes and Nelson glances at the screen to see who had texted the lovely woman sitting next to him: Code 700 Sailors. 'Oh, you work for Code 700 too?' is what Nelson wanted to say to break the ice, but he was cut off, the weeklong brief had begun. Nelson tried to strike up a conversation with May, mostly because they were possibly working in the same area, but he never had a chance. May moved seats later in the day when she saw some of her old coworkers on the other side of the room.

The 2 would meet later on to figure out that they both were in fact working for the same group, when they would bump into each other in the parking lot at Nelson's workplace, Hakozaki. May's leadership sat there, however she was only visiting as she worked about 45 minutes away at a different fuels terminal, Tsurumi. They would strike up professional conversations here and there, but nothing stuck, UNTIL...

August 1, 2020: Our First Date

During a regular meeting at Tsurumi, Nelson decided to ask May where she went for Chinese and/or Asian food. May mentioned Din Tai Fung for good Chinese food in Yokohama. Nelson was not about to be told that Din Tai Fung is the pinnacle of Chinese food, but he really wanted to meet May outside of work. So, he offered up to say that the area where Din Tai Fung is in Yokohama had a lot of good restaurant choices, would she like to meet him up on day for lunch? Nelson offered up his choice for culinary excellence: Shake Shack. They met up in Yokohama and ate, they then strolled around Queen's Square Mall for the day. All in all, a good date, and both wanted to see each other again. They went on quick Starbucks runs throughout the day, they went around town, and they stayed in and watched movies. The sparks were flying! They would go on trips throughout Japan, even doing a 1,000 mile road trip to Niigata and back, taking in hiking and thrift shopping along the way.

Nelson had accepted a job in Pearl Harbor and moved on this day. Nelson and May's relationship was budding at this time and both were very positive about the future. May's plan was to get out of the Navy after her tour in Yokosuka was over, but had no idea what she wanted to do after that. They did long distance for awhile, and it worked surprisingly well, mostly because both were incredibly busy, but they made time for each other. The true test was May coming to Hawaii to see if she would like living here, this would truly make or break the relationship. She came to visit for 3 weeks in April 2021 and...she loved it!

July 25, 2021: Reunited for Good

After being apart for 8 months, May moves to Hawaii. The 2 continue to make memories all over.

October 9, 2022: She said YES!

After 2 years of being together, the couple decided that they wanted to spend the rest of their lives with each other. During a stay at the Aulani Resort, Nelson dropped to a knee and asked May to marry him. The couple are thrilled to invite their family and friends to their wedding and receptions to celebrate love.
