Would you believe me if I told you my mom brought me here when I was a little girl to wash our car? Its true. This place used to be a carwash that was transformed into a brewery. If you want to have a beer or just listen to some live music then this is a cool place to check out. Nick and I enjoy coming to the sandfly.
If you want to enjoy a glass of wine then try out our very own groundhog winery.
This is the home of the famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil. When I first brought Nicholas to my hometown we had to make a stop at our library downtown where Phil and Phyllis live throughout the year. If you want to see our famous Punxsutawney Phil while in town stop down at Phil's Burrow.
Punxsutawney – home of the world-famous furry weather forecaster – is also known as “The Weather Capital of the World.” At the Weather Discovery Center you can learn about science and folklore.
If you want to get out and get fresh air the Mahoning Shadow Trail is a lovely place to go explore the wilderness. Along the trail you can visit an historic site called "The Coke Ovens" which is where coal was mined. There used to be 50 of them. This area used to be a coal field, supposedly the largest one in Pennsylvania. Seven of these series of mines were located on this very trail. They were the most productive. Also along the trail runs Mahoning Creek.
When I first told Nicholas about my small hometown Punxsutawney he was amazed that we had Punxsutawney Phil statues all around town.
It may come as no surprise that the groundhog is kind of a big deal in the city. While the real guy lives year-round in Phil’s Burrow, which is attached to the public library, there are many Phil doppelgangers hanging out all over town. Stop in the Chamber of Commerce and grab a map, then set out on your hunt for Phantastic Phil’s! These themed ceramic versions of the town’s most famous resident were made by artists and community groups and run the gambit from the original “Phillage” in top hat and tail to Fireman Phil and Lady Liberty Phil.
Each six-foot-tall Phil is a work of art and totally individual. Snap a photo with all 32 to create your Punxsy-themed photobook. It’s a totally free and a fun way to spend a morning in Punxsy!
If you haven’t noticed, Punxsy has a bit of a thing for vintage. Yoder Antique Mall is the largest one in the area with over 90 vendors and three stories of treasures to browse! You could spend all day shopping the Betty Boop statues, vintage posters, and antique tools. When the weather is nice, they often have an outdoor market serving local goodies and cider. If you’re a lover of antiques or just enjoy the nostalgia of flea markets, Yoder's is one of the best out there!
