What's the difference between Key West and Sunset Key?
Key West is the most southern point of the United States and is the main island. Sunset Key is a separate island off of the keys, directly across from Key West. Sunset Key is a private resort, and can only be accessed by guests on the day of the wedding, 02/08/25. There are exceptions.
What are the exceptions to access Sunset Key?
Aside from all wedding guests being placed on "the list" to access Sunset Key at the time of the reception, there are a few other exceptions. Guests of the Sunset Key Resort may access Sunset Key at any time. If you choose to book a cottage on this 5-star resort (please contact us before booking), you will have unlimited access to Sunset Key. You can also briefly access Sunset Key if you make a reservation at the restaurant on Sunset Key, Lattidues.
How do Sunset Key Resort Guests leave the island?
Should you decide to book a cottage at Sunset Key Resorts, travel is very easy. The resort provides a ferry that shuttles resort guests and restaurant visitors to/from Sunset Key and Key West. The ferry runs every 15 minutes until 2am. After 2am, the ferry is available during all after-hours, upon request.
Where should we stay on Key West?
There are many places to stay on Key West, will hotels all over the island. We believe the best area to stay is near Mallory Square and along the wharf, as this is a prime location with a beautiful view, which is why we are recommending the following hotels -
Hyatt Vacation Club at Sunset Harbor,
Pier House Resort & Spa,
Hyatt Centric Key West Resort & Spa,
Ocean Key Resort & Spa.
If you would also like to be away from all the hustle and bustle, a popular but more expensive hotel is the Casa Marina Key West, Curio Collection.
We also recommend looking into Air B&Bs if traveling with a large group, as this may be the most cost-effective. We recommend Air B&Bs also within the Truman Annex.
We recommended staying on the opposite side of White St for ease of access (in yellow), and near the main strip located on Duval St (in pink), but do not recommend staying on Duval St as it can be noisy, especially at night. On the map below we also highlighted the two main beaches (in blue) and sunset key (in red). Please note that some hotels have separate, artificial beaches that may be easier to access.
If you find that a large amount of people are interested in staying in one hotel, please reach out, as we can arrange for room-blocking. At this time, WE DO NOT HAVE ANY HOTEL ROOMS BLOCKED.
Is there transportation on Key West?
Key West is extremely walkable, especially if you stay near the main strip. While Ubers are abundant, they can be pricey. We do recommend renting bikes, especially if you are interested in exploring the whole island! See the "Things to Do" tab for our top suggestions of what to see/do while in Key West! While bikes are not needed for nightlife given all the bars are located on Duval St, this will allow for the best way to navigate the island during the day, especially to get to the two main beaches. Please note, that some hotels have artificial beaches, in case you are not interested in traveling around the island to go to the beach. There are many bike rental spots all over the island, but we are always happy with Eaton Bikes Rentals.
How to get to Key West?
Key West has its own airport! As soon as your plane lands, you walk off the plane and directly onto the Key West land, no navigating a big airport at all. There are direct flights from Newark airport to the Key West airport. Average round-trip flights, if booked in advanced for economy, should range around $300-$400.
