Do the locals speak English?
Yes. Malaysia was a British colony from 1824 to 1957, when Malaysia gained independence, so most locals speak English. The country has three major ethnic groups: Malays, Chinese, and Indians. Therefore, even though people know English, you'll hear a lot of Malay, Cantonese, Hokkien, Mandarin, and Tamil, too.
What clothes should I bring?
It's hot and humid year round but many buildings are air-conditioned so bring layers, like a cardigan or shawl.
Also, sandals that are easy to get on and off because it's customary to leave your shoes outside many indoor spaces, like people's homes.
Plan to bring a nice outfit for the wedding ceremony and, if you're traveling north with us, you can wear it again for dinner in Perlis with the royal family. Malaysia is predominantly Muslim so modesty is considered respectful. For special occasions, women traditionally wear Baju Kurung or Baju Kebaya and men wear Baju Melayu.

How much cash should I carry?
Most places accept cards, so a good travel credit card will be most useful. Exchanging USD$50 to Ringgit Malaysia (RM), which people call ringgit, will be plenty. Some money exchangers will give you a better rate on large US bills (USD$50 or $100), so I'd recommend using $50 bills if you really want cash.
What type of outlet adapter do I need?
In Malaysia, power sockets are type G. The standard voltage is 240V, whereas in the US it's 120V, so for certain appliances like hair dryers you'll need a voltage converter.
