Florence Airport Basics
Name/Code: Florence Airport, Peretola (Amerigo Vespucci), IATA code FLR
FLR is a smaller international airport; it handles lots of flights around Europe, but very few (if any) truly direct nonstop flights to/from the U.S. for many routes.
Fun Fact: The Florence Airport is getting a renovation, and the roof is proposed to have a fully operational vineyard on top!
Airlines & Flight Options
Most flights into Florence are European carriers. Some airlines you’ll see operating into FLR include Air France, British Airways, KLM, ITA Airways, Austrian, Swiss, Vueling, Volotea, etc. For U.S. travelers, you’ll almost always have at least one layover (e.g. in a European hub like Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Madrid, or Rome) unless you fly into a bigger nearby airport (e.g. Pisa, Milan, or Rome) and then connect to Florence.
Average round-trip flights from Florence to the U.S. often run in the $700-$1,000 range, depending on dates/season.
Getting from Florence Airport to City Center or Hotels
Florence’s airport is very close — about 4-8 km from the historic city center, and 17 km the Hotel Hermitage.
Tips for Booking Flights to Europe:
Book early: For international travel to Europe, 2-4 months ahead is good. For peak season (summer, and holidays), even earlier (5-6 months) helps.
Avoid peak times: July & August tend to be most expensive in Italy, also very crowded. If you can travel in late spring (May) or early fall, fares are more reasonable.
Use flexible-date tools: See if shifting by a few days saves money. Sometimes flying midweek is cheaper.
Watch for deals from European hubs: If you fly into large European hubs (e.g. Rome, Paris, Frankfurt), compare whether it's cheaper to land there then take a local flight or train to Florence.
1. Walking (Best for the Historic Center)
Why: Florence is compact and most attractions (Duomo, Uffizi, Ponte Vecchio, etc.) are within 10–20 minutes of each other.
Pros: Free, scenic, no traffic stress.
Cons: Cobblestones can be tough in some shoes; not ideal if carrying luggage.
2. Tram
Lines: T1, T2, T3 connect airport, train stations, suburbs, and some parts of the city.
Tickets: ~€1.50 (valid for 90 minutes, buy at machines or apps before boarding).
Pros: Fast, clean, affordable. Great for airport to city center.
Cons: Limited coverage in historic core (which is pedestrian-focused).
3. Bus
Where they go: Good for neighborhoods not covered by tram.
Tickets: ~€1.50–2; buy in advance (tobacco shops, newsstands, or ATAF app).
Pros: Widens your reach beyond the tram.
Cons: Traffic can cause delays; not always intuitive for tourists.
4. Taxi
Where to get them: Taxi stands (train station, piazzas, airport) or call/app (not hailed on the street).
Rates: Fixed airport fare (~€22–26), otherwise meter-based.
Pros: Convenient, direct.
Cons: Pricey compared to tram/bus; availability can be limited late at night.
5. Bicycle & E-Scooter
Rental options: Apps like Ridemovi (bike/e-bike) and Helbiz (e-scooters).
Pros: Fun, eco-friendly, quick for short trips.
Cons: Crowded streets and cobblestones can make riding tricky; helmets not usually provided.
6. Rental Car
Best for: Day trips outside Florence (Tuscany countryside, Chianti, Siena, Pisa), traveling quickly and conveniently from airport to hotel.
Pros: Freedom to explore Tuscany.
Cons: Not recommended inside Florence; parking is expensive and scarce.
