What to Expect at an Orthodox Wedding

What to Expect at an Orthodox Wedding

If you've never attended an Orthodox wedding before, here is some information to help you be prepared. We want our guests to feel welcome and comfortable enough to share in our joy so, if you have any questions that aren't answered in the following list, please reach out to us!

It's traditional to stand during Orthodox services; however, there will be limited seating available for those who need it. The marriage ceremony will be just over an hour long, so wear comfy shoes!

We took the names of saints at our baptisms and will be using these names throughout the ceremony. Peter will be called Joseph for St. Joseph the Hesychast, and Delsie will be called Michaela for St. Michael the Archangel. Don't worry, you're at the right wedding!

Another aspect of our wedding that may be unusual to some of our guests is the style of the church building. The cathedral is covered with icons. We believe that these paintings illustrate the power of God through His saints. You're welcome to join us in venerating them by making the sign of the cross and kissing the icon.

Orthodox churches have a dress code which, at its most basic, requires that men and women wear clothing that covers their shoulders and falls below the knees. Women may wear head coverings, and men may not.

We'd like to welcome children of all ages to our wedding. We are used to crawlers and criers, and won't be offended if they want to come closer for a better view. Please feel free to move around the room if it's helpful, and if your arms need a break, there will likely be a babushka nearby willing to lend a helping hand.

Also, please note that we will have a photographer. While we appreciate your desire to capture the moment, we ask that you please keep your cell phones on silent and in your pockets and purses during the ceremony!
