We can only attend one of the days, would that be an issue?
That's completely fine! While we would love everyone to attend every event, we understand that some of the events take place during the work week. Please let us know which events you are unable and able to attend when you RSVP.
When do I need to RSVP by?
We request that all guests RSVP to each event no later than Saturday, July 6th. This will give us ample time to notify the venues and make seating arrangements.
Are children able to attend for the Sikh Wedding events and Wedding Ceremony?
Thursday and Friday are family-friendly events and children are welcome to attend. Just be sure to include them in your RSVP for the day(s) they will be attending.
What time should we arrive on Thursday/Friday?
On Thursday, we request that you arrive at Martinsville Gardens by 4pm to coincide with the beginning of the Maiyan ceremony.
On Friday, we request that you arrive at the GSSA Bridgewater no later than 9am. The groom and his family will be expected to arrive at 9am and his arrival will kick-start the rest of the events.
What is the Maiyan (Thursday event)?
This is a cleansing ceremony done to purify the bride and groom in preparation for their wedding day. The tradition consists of family and friends rubbing a tumeric paste on the bride and groom - making their skin glow for the big day!
What is the Jaago (Thursday Event)?
Jaago literally means "wake-up" so it signifies the start of the party. The night before the wedding, friends and family of the bride and groom celebrate with an evening of song and dance. Jaagos (pots decorated with lights) will be carried and passed around as we celebrate.
Is there a dress code that guests should follow in the Gurdwara?
Out of respect, all attire must follow a modest dress code. This includes no excess cleavage, no exposed backs, no bare midriffs, and no ripped pants or shorts. Legs must be mostly covered as we will be sitting on the floor. If you do not want to wear Indian clothing, we recommend wearing pants or leggings!
What kind of head covering can I wear?
Head covering is required in the Gurdwara (Sikh temple) upon entering. Traditionally, men wear a turban and women wear a chunni. Alternatively, men can wear a bandana and women can wear a scarf - really any cloth that would cover your head. We will be providing bandanas at the entrance of the Gurdwara for all guests to wear if you do not have a head covering. No beanies or ball caps, please.
Are there specific shoes we should wear?
All shoes will be required to be removed upon entering the Gurdwara. There are shoe closets located in the lobby for all guests to remove their footwear. You are welcome to wear or bring socks to wear indoors during the ceremony.
What is the Milni?
Taking place after the groom arrives, this is the meeting of the bride and groom's family and friends in front of the Gurdwara. This event is usually followed by a short prayer.
What occurs during the Sikh Wedding Ceremony?
Kirtan + Ardaas (Spiritual hyms and first prayer) - Spiritual hyms will be recited and sung. The bride and groom will walk in and sit in front of the Guru Granth Sahib (the holy scripture and spiritual guide for the Sikhs). The Granthi (officiator) will then recite the first prayer seeking the blessings of Waheguru (God) for the marriage.
Palla - The groom brings a decorated sash (Palla) to the ceremony. The bride's father will place the end of the groom's sash in her hands. This symbolizes the families coming together. The bride and groom will hold the Palla as they walk around the Sri Guru Granth Sahib and take their sacred vows.
Anand Karaj (Blissful Union) + Laavan (Vows) - The bride and groom circle the Sri Guru Granth Sahib four times; once everytime the Granthi recites a laav (wedding verse). In order, the laavs are: to love forever, to complete each other, to be faithful, and to be together in happiness & adversity.
Ardaas (Final Prayer) - All are asked to rise for a final prayer. A verse is chosen from the Guru and recited to bestow goodwill and happiness to all present.
Kara Parshad (Indian Sweet) - Parshad is an offer of blessing and is served to the entire congregation. It is accepted with both hands cupped together.
I want to wear traditional Indian clothing. Where would I be able to purchase an outfit?
We are not requiring any of our guests to wear traditional Indian clothing, but we love that you want to wear it to our wedding! Personally (and surprisingly), we have had great luck purchasing clothing from Amazon in the past. They have many options, styles, and colors for both men and women. We have linked to some of the online stores that we have purchased from in the past below.
Traditional Indian clothing online stores that we have purchased from are listed below. These are not the only options, so feel free to try others! This clothing is meant to fit loosely and should feel comfortable to sit and move in.
Jansaya - (Amazon link) Mostly clothing for women. They have a variety of different styles to choose from.
Tathastu - (Amazon link) Mostly clothing for men. There is only one style of clothing, but there are many other brands on Amazon that offer other colors, patterns, and clothing material.
