Q + A

What’s the weather like in Ghana?

Ghana is hot and humid with an occasional chance for rain but it usually doesn’t rain for long. Umbrellas and rain gear aren’t necessary but consider bringing sunglasses, a hat, a visor, and/or sunscreen.

What kind of clothes should I wear?

Bring light breathable clothing like sundresses, tank tops, and shorts. Sandals are perfect and gym shoes are ok too but not necessary. Just make sure you’re comfortable because there will be a bit of walking here and there. * Boti falls includes a 45min hike. If you want to go, bring a sturdy pair of gym shoes but they’re not needed if you’re just going to the waterfalls. **And don’t forget your bathing suit for Boti Falls and Labadi Beach. ** *The wedding is NOT formal. It’s too hot for that but look nice and be comfortable.

What currency do they use?

Ghana uses Cedi not dollars. $1 usd = 16 cedi (approximately). You can bring dollars and we can get it exchanged for cedi. Most major stores and restaurants take cards but check with your bank before you leave if they charge exchange fees. And yes, there are ATMs but again check if your bank will charge any fees. *You will need mostly, if not all cedi to make purchases. ** I use a free app called My Currency Converter that comes in handy while shopping.

What’s the food like?

There are plenty of restaurants to eat at but be opened minded that their food and taste buds are different than ours. That doesn’t mean you can’t find something good to eat. I don’t eat from street vendors but if you decide to, be cautious. *Only drink bottled beverages, especially bottled water.

Where can I shop for souvenirs?

One of the best places I found to shop is at the Art Center. Remember vendors will know you’re American and try to up charge things. Don’t be afraid to bargain and if you need help bargaining please let us know.

Will I have cell service?

It’s best to check with your service provider before you travel. Otherwise, we can stay connected on Whatsapp which requires WiFi. Please download the app if you haven’t already and send me a message before you leave.

What’s the best way to get around?

The neighborhood of Osu is very walkable but for long distances taxis, Uber, or Bolt (same as Uber). Check prices on the apps to make sure you’re not paying too much. You can also bargain with the taxi driver but prices are set on Uber and Bolt.
