Our story begins with a thought-provoking question on a dating profile.

After a series of conversations online, Rick grew skeptical of the responses he received. Jane felt offended by these kinds of questions. The skepticism propelled the need for the first meeting. The goal of our first meeting was to prove a point— and prove a point it did. 🙈 Girls tend to say what they feel, while guys follow what is said and feel nothing.

Spring Cafe (Bellevue) ☕️ is where we shared our first coffee. Rick’s goal was to verify if this person was a scammer. Jane’s goal was to prove she was real and to make this person apologize for rudely questioning whether she was a scammer.

At first sight, we were both shocked to learn about our different perspectives. Rick was surprised to see an outgoing personality. Jane was surprised to see that this rude person actually seemed pretty friendly (and funny).

Even with slightly less-than-perfect makeup, Jane’s Taiwanese English showcased her cuteness, beauty, and personality. Rick was instantly attracted to her outgoing nature and carefree attitude and was eager to explain that she was not a scammer. Our conversation shifted from English to Chinese, from Jane slowly speaking English to Rick slowly speaking Chinese.

Almost three years since we first met, many laughs and tears have been shared, and we are still making the decision to move forward. Early in our conversations, Jane said she wanted to experience many firsts together. Rick assured her that, despite having experienced a lot already, there would always be room for first-time moments together. We will always have many opportunities to experience our FIRSTS.

Through our time together, we have had many firsts: our first disagreement, first impression of each other, first surprise in learning each other’s temper, first road trip to Vancouver, BC, first trip to Disney World, first time meeting the parents (like Meet the Parents), first time missing a plane due to an invalid ID, first boyfriend to last the longest in a relationship, and, lastly, the first time writing it all out for everyone to read.

As long as we are with each other, there will be no shortage of firsts.
