Lorca is not located near any major airports or rail routes.
Madrid and Barcelona are likely to be your cheapest and most convenient points of arrival to Spain if you're flying directly from Australia or outside of Europe.
To reach Lorca from Madrid or Barcelona there are several options:
By air (overseas)
Madrid/Barcelona to Murcia
The closest airport is Corvera Murcia. The Corvera Murcia Airport to Lorca is approximately a 1hr drive by car. The airport has car hire and taxi services.
The airport is primarily served by Ryanair, Volotea and Air Arabia Maroc - however only has a few flights per day, most of which are international. There are direct flights from/to Madrid and Barcelona.
Madrid/Barcelona to Alicante - EASIEST AND BEST OPTION
The closest major international airport is Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport in Alicante.
Alicante airport is approximately a 1.5hr drive by car to Lorca. The airport has car hire and is connected by bus directly to Ros' home town in Puerto Lumbreras via Alsa Bus.
The airport is primarily served domestically by Iberia, Air Europa, and Air Nostrum. There are multiple flights per day from/to Madrid and Barcelona. The airport is often also able to end destination for most large international airlines.
Madrid/Barcelona to Almeria Airport
Almeria airport is located southwest of Lorca, in Andalusia.
The airport is located approximately a 1.5hr drive by car to Lorca and has car hire.
The airport is primarily served domestically by Air Nostrum and Vueling, and offers direct flights from/to Madrid and Barcelona.
By bus
Alsa is the main bus company in Spain. Alsa buses service both Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras. There are direct buses to Lorca from Madrid Airport, and to Puerto Lumbreras from Alicante Airport, however, frequency is low. In most cases you won't have to change buses but worthwhile being mindful of if you are booking a bus.
By train
Spain has a high-speed rail network mainly ran by national railway company Renfe.
From Madrid, it's possible (and easy) to use high-speed rail to travel from Madrid to Murcia.
Murcia is approximately 1hr drive from Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras. There are frequent Alsa buses connecting Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras with Murcia.
By car
Hiring a car in Spain is quite cheap and an easy way to get around (especially from/to Puerto Lumbreras, Lorca, and Murcia). Roads are well-maintained and safe, just keep right!
Another option is to do carpooling through BlaBlaCar.
To reach Lorca from Murcia by car it's approximately a 1hr drive.
To reach Lorca by car from the major airports:
4.5 hour drive from Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport in Madrid
6.5 hour drive from Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport in Barcelona
1.5 hour drive from Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport in Alicante
1.5 hour drive from Almeria Airport in Almeria.
The drive along most of these routes follows national highways.
