July is a great time to visit the National Bison Range who's ownership was just transferred back to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. This activity is only accessible by car and requires a small fee. Get ready for some incredible views and hopefully to see some of our beautiful bison herd!
1-2.5 hours.
July is a great (but busy time) to visit Glacier National Park! If you have time before or after the wedding we recommend getting a hike in or traveling on the Going-To-the-Sun Road. GNP requires online reservations to access the park. Military gets in free but still requires a reservation. Glacier is about 1.5-2 hours from Saint Ignatius and does not offer any public transportation options. Reachable only by car.
With the iconic Mission Mountains as your backdrop, there's no shortage of places to hike in the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes wilderness. Most trailheads are 15-20 minutes from Saint Ignatius and can be completed in a day such as; Mission Falls, Lucifer Lake, Grizzly Lakes, East Saint Mary's Peak, Mud Lakes and a few others. Many of these hikes are not for the faint of hearted and require an experienced hiker (and bear spray)! If you are looking for a more leisure hike/walk I would check out the Mission Reservoir and Lake McDonald which are great places to swim and relax. Please feel free to reach out to us if you are interested in hiking locally.
To access any of these areas you must fill out and pay for a recreational permit from CS&KT. Please respect Tribal sovereignty and know all funds go to support conservation. The permit office is located in Allards Stage Shop off of highway 93 in Saint Ignatius.
If you're ready for some summer swimming Flathead Lake is your place to go! This is the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi and is gorgeous to boot! You can rent a boat (in advance) and check out Wild Horse Island or cruise around. Or you can visit one of the many public parks to go for a swim!
