Our journey began in Okinawa, Japan, in 2019. What started as a simple friendship quickly blossomed into a relationship that November. We spent that first year exploring Japan together—trying new restaurants, soaking in the culture, and falling more in love with each passing day.When COVID-19 hit, we adapted to a quieter life at home, finding comfort in each other’s company and countless cozy movie nights. A few weeks later, when restrictions eased to allow outdoor activities in pairs, we seized the opportunity. Almost every weekend, without fail, we set out on a new adventure—exploring a different beach, chasing sunsets, or discovering hidden hiking trails. These weekly getaways became our ritual, each one deepening our connection and creating lasting memories. They unknowingly prepared us for the more difficult part of our journey that was to come.In November 2020, Sergio was deployed to South Korea for work, marking the first of several challenging separations. After three long months, he returned to Okinawa, but due to quarantine regulations, we still couldn't be together. Sabrina brought him food each day, and though we couldn’t be in the same room, we found comfort in the simple act of waving to each other through the glass, patiently waiting until we could finally reunite.Just a week after Sergio’s quarantine ended, Sabrina received orders to Australia, where she was stationed for five months. Despite being on different continents, we never let distance come between us—our “FaceTime dates” became a cherished routine, allowing us to share meals and conversations across time zones.While Sabrina was away, Sergio submitted for reenlistment and was selected for Drill Instructor duty. When Sabrina finally returned to Okinawa, we had only four short months together before Sergio left for Drill Instructor school in South Carolina. Thankfully, Sabrina was able to attend a course in Missouri, just four hours from Sergio, who was on leave in Arkansas with his family, giving us one last visit before training began.Then came our toughest stretch: Sabrina returned to Okinawa while Sergio went to South Carolina, separated by a 16-hour time difference. For an entire year, we made time for 20-minute daily calls, sometimes the only moment we had together, but our commitment never wavered.In October 2022, our long-distance chapter finally came to an end when Sabrina received orders to South Carolina, just 20 minutes from Sergio. Reunited at last, we found that even after all the distance, we had never been closer. With Sergio’s rigorous schedule, early mornings, and late nights, we moved in together and began learning each other on an even deeper level.Between Sergio’s work cycles, we began fostering dogs and cats, and eventually fell in love with one of our foster cats, Harlowe, whom we adopted. She became part of our little family and joined our place into a home away from home.In November 2024, Sergio proposed at Cypress Gardens—the filming location of&nbsp;The Notebook. He recreated a scene from one of Sabrina’s favorite movies, making the moment feel like pure magic. She, of course, said YES!After three intense years of Drill Instructor duty, we finally received joint orders to Quantico, Virginia, where we bought our first home and are now continuing our love story at a slower, more peaceful pace, together.
