The BEST Nashville hot chicken sandwich you will ever eat. They are open 11 AM until 7 PM and the line is usually like 1-2 hours long (closed on Mondays) and it is found in this random shopping center in the middle of Chinatown.
Despite the long wait, it is one of the best things you will ever eat. Sallie couldn't form full sentences for a good hour after eating here as it was that good (and they kill with their hospitality).
I think the best time to go is around 4-5 PM as the line is only about 25-45 minutes long around then since they expanded their hours (and weekends are a lot busier than weekdays).
Slab BBQ is new to LA and started out as an underground BBQ that you had to order off instagram. Really. Then the guy would send you his address to pick it up from his backyard in Studio City if you got in that week like it was a drug deal.
Well, now he has gone legit with an actual restaurant in Beverly Grove and it is still really good. We have had BBQ from some of the top places in Texas (Pecan Lodge, Snow, La Barbecue and Hutchins) and this is right up there with them. Matt loves his brisket while Sallie loves the ribs.
Texas-style breakfast tacos? Brisket tacos? Migas? Queso? Does any of this sound good?
The Hollywood location is the original and the closest to the Westside but only open 8 AM until 3 PM. The Highland Park location is farther away, but is open until 10 PM and serves alcohol.
It is not an official LA vacation until you buy tacos from a truck in a parking lot of a dumpy gas station sort of in the middle of nowhere.
These are the official Matty B-approved tacos of LA. Get the al pastor (marinated pork).
The truck is in the same spot each day and all night. If you go at night, there will be a decent crowd and they slice it freshly off the spit out in the open with a small piece of pineapple.
Gjusta is a bakery, deli and cafe in this empty warehouse in Venice.
Basically everything there is good, but make sure to get a sandwich or at least buy a french baguette as the bread is insanely good.
And since you are in Venice, it also provides some good hipster people watching.
A small and good gastropub roughly 1.4 miles from our condo that has 36 beers on tap (mostly all California-based breweries).
Ever seen Matt brag about drinking Pliny the Elder on social media? Probably was drinking it at this bar.
As for food, they are known for their burger, but they don't do modifications so don't ask for ketchup!
Might as well put some exercise on here since everything else is food or beer.
This is probably our most go-to hike since it is a nice 3-mile trek and moderate in difficulty (and it is close to our condo). The park entrance is located at Temescal Canyon Road and Sunset Blvd, about a mile from PCH.
You can go in either direction of the loop. The west side is steeper to begin and has the ocean views. The east side is more gradual so depends on whether you want the steep part on the incline or on the way down. And don't forget to wear old shoes as it can get dusty.
Sallie and Matt like craft beer (understatement of the year).
Instead of doing an entry for all of the places we like, here is a list of some of our favorite LA breweries (and you use the Google machine for the rest):
Modern Times Beer: The Dankness Dojo (Downtown LA)
Mikkeller DTLA (Downtown LA)
Santa Monica Brew Works (Santa Monica)
Highland Park Brewery (Chinatown)
Boomtown Brewery (Downtown LA/Arts District)
Arts District Brewing Company (Downtown LA/Arts District)
Angel City Brewery (Downtown LA/Arts District)
LA Ale Works (Hawthorne)
Smog City Brewery (Torrance)
Brouwerij West (San Pedro)
Frogtown Brewery (Atwater Village/Silver Lake)
There are a lot of different sushi places in LA and this is one of our favorites. There are many different locations, including Santa Monica and Brentwood, but the Calabasas location would be the closest to the wedding location/hotel.
You can select all the things you want or just order the Trust Me (or Nozawa Trust Me, which is even more food) and everything is already pre-selected for you.
Abbot Kinney is best known for creating the canals in Venice (California, not Italy) in 1905 so they named a mile-long street after him in Venice which has a bunch of different shops and restaurants.
You can get a gourmet donut from Blue Star followed by coffee from Blue Bottle on your way to getting a crazy comfortable hoodie from Aviator Nation.
Super casual seafood joint along the PCH. Sallie and Matt went here for the first time after a hike on their third or fourth date. They saw Lauren Conrad from Laguna Beach/The Hills fame.
One of us lost their sh*t.
It was Matt.
One of the most gorgeous beaches in the LA area. They also have a few mini-caves to go spelunking* in.
* Spelunking is a word you only learn in fourth grade when you played the "Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?" computer game at school.
You will need to see water on this trip and what better place than the Malibu Pier. From the Pier's official website - "Watch the surfers, spot a dolphin, rub shoulders with movie stars, and leave the hustle bustle of the world behind."
We can guarantee two of those four things.
Obviously the dolphins and movie stars.
