For the likely few of you who've never been to UVA, be sure to take some time to walk around the historic grounds -- which are also a UN world heritage site. The Lawn with its accompanying Rotunda serve as the heart of the campus, but don't miss the amphitheater next door. It's an easy trolley ride, 1-mile-ish walk from downtown Charlottesville, or a short drive from Pantops/James Monroe's Highland.
The Corner (pictured above at its finest after we won the national championship) is the main strip of bars and restaurants adjacent to UVA's campus. It's got a bit of everything, making it a great place to wander down after visiting the main campus. Check out Trin for bold rock pitchers during the day and the third layer of hell at night, Finch for last minute clothing needs (for the ladies), and Christian's for Ryan's favorite late-night pizza.
Charlottesville has an insane amount of wineries, but my personal favorite is King Family. It has a variety of bottles (be sure to try the Crosé) at pretty reasonable prices, as well as small snacks available for purchase. There's often live music and the views are unbeatable. It's also where Ryan and I took our first picture together 4.5 years ago.
This wedding isn't worth traveling to unless you visit Bodo's bagels while you're there. All UVA alum know there is no better bagel. With an overwhelming amount of toppings to chose from, this makes the ultimate hangover cure or the best way to get a party started. There are three locations in town -- one on the corner, one near downtown, and one on 29 on the way into town from NOVA.
My personal favorite: everything with egg, pesto, and feta spread and a lemonade. Ryan's favorite: double bacon, egg, and cheddar on an everything with three milks.
Boylan Heights is the staple sports bar on UVA's corner, which is known for its hamburgers and slippery wahoos. The Groomsmen will convene here on the Friday night before the wedding to watch the Purdue/Oregon football game. Anyone who's interested is welcome to join! Whoever can guess what the bridesmaids are doing instead gets a prize.
Not to be confused with the blue mountains on the Coors Light can, Blue Mountain Brewery is a staple in the Charlottesville area. It's one of the closest stops on the famous 151 brewery/winery stretch in Nelson county and has great food, beer, and views. I would recommend finding a DD for this particular activity, because Ubering there is easy, but Ubering home is not.
For the adventurous folks in the group, this is a beautiful easy hike that has a waterfall/swimming hole that's super popular in the summer. I realize as I'm writing this in June that it might not be such good swimming weather in October but don't let me stop you. It's a 3 mile out-and-back hike located about 20 minutes outside of Charlottesville.
About a mile from UVA's campus and a 10 minute drive from the wedding venue sits the downtown mall. This adorable little strip has lots of cute restaurants and shops, making it the perfect place to kill some time before the wedding. I'd recommend Bebedero, The Fitzroy, and Bizou for sit-down food and Grit or Mudhouse for coffee. If you like cigs inside, Miller's (aka Milllllllarrrrrrrssssss) is must.
If you know, you know. If you don't know, you can probably guess. Someone will be sure to partake in this UVA tradition post wedding, so come to the lawn for what is sure to be a great way to conclude a great wedding.
