Join us in the morning as we head to Fern Canyon.
Please do not feel like you need to join us for the whole day of festivities to partake. You may join us at any part in this day's journey.
**Departure**
We will leave around 9:30 a.m. from Brookings, Oregon.
Make sure to grab breakfast beforehand, and it is recommended that you bring a lunch/snack, since there will not be many places that sell food along the way once we enter the redwoods. However, we will stop at the brewery later that day for an early dinner.
We will travel in caravan-style to Fern Canyon, which includes driving along the 101 to the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. The total drive to Fern Canyon from Brookings, Oregon will take about 90 minutes.
In order to visit Fern Canyon, each carload of individuals will need a permit. As of now, we've obtained permits for 4 vehicles. If you are interested in joining us, and you are not immediate family, then please let us know so we can acquire a permit for your carload of lovely humans. Spots to visit do fill up, so please let us know as soon as possible.
Note: Cars will drive through a small creek, as such, vehicles should have appropriate clearance.
**Fern Canyon**
Fern Canyon is the inspiration for our daughter's name. This place is a mellow walk, but you will walk through several very small, but also cold streams. You can go around these streams by balancing on different trunks, but it is much easier to walk right through the streams. As such, we recommend bringing sandals and pants that you can role up to visit this location. It can also be cooler in the canyon, so you will likely want to bring a jacket.
Fern Canyon is a 1.1 mile loop. The loop does climb quite a bit in elevation. You can do the full loop, or you can go to the end of the trail where the loop begins and walk back. The beginning of the trail (which is arguably the prettiest part) is flat other than climbing over a stump or two. It will likely take around two hours to visit the canyon.
**Gold Bluffs Beach**
Gold Bluffs Beach is right next to the entrance to Fern Canyon. We will stop here after visiting Fern Canyon for some sunshine and waves. This will also be an excellent place to eat any snacks or lunches that you brought. We might stay here for about an hour, weather permitting. It can be quite windy at this beach. The water will likely be far too cold to swim, but you are encouraged to dip your feet in the water.
**Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail**
Our next stop will be Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail. This trail is a 1.4 mile loop through towering redwoods. This is a famous trail that is often one of the most recommended loops for people coming to see the redwoods. This 1.4 mile loop takes about an hour to complete. We encourage people to take the trail, but there are also benches to relax and watch the redwoods. People can also choose to walk part of the trail and turnaround and walk back.
Just outside of the trail, elk are well-known to inhabit the meadow. Hopefully, they will be around in their splendor for photos. We will like spend a little under two hours at this location.
**Departure to Crescent City**
From here we will head to Crescent City for dinner at SeaQuake Brewery. The brewery has pizza, tacos, hamburgers, and is rated as one of the top restaurants in Crescent City. It is close to the ocean, too. This is our version of the rehearsal dinner.
**Sea Lions & Lighthouse**
We will finish the day by visiting the local lighthouse in Crescent City, which is very close to the brewery. It is up a long steep hill, but it is free and open to the public. It has an amazing view of the Northern California Coast. We will conclude the day by visiting the sea lions on the peer. They love to lounge in this particular location. We can listen to them talking while watching the sunset.
**Brooking, Oregon**
We will head back to Brookings, which is about 30 minutes away, and make our way to our abodes. Here we will eagerly await your presence at the wedding the next day.
