Before our wedding, we will celebrate a traditional Congolese dowry ceremony, a beautiful and symbolic event that represents the coming together of our two families. In this tradition, Sean’s family will formally visit Sandra’s family to express their intentions and respect.
During the ceremony, representatives will speak on behalf of the bride and groom, offering words of wisdom about marriage—what is expected, what makes a strong and happy union, and how both families will support us on this journey.
A key part of this tradition is the giving and receiving of dowry gifts, which symbolize appreciation for the bride's family and the union of the couple. These gifts are a gesture of goodwill, honoring tradition and strengthening the bond between the two families.
This ceremony will also be a celebration of both cultures through dress. Sean and his party will arrive in full kilt outfits, proudly wearing the Mackinlay tartan, while other family members will also wear the tartan to represent their heritage. Sandra’s family will wear their own African-patterned attire, symbolizing their family’s lineage and traditions. This vibrant display of Scottish, Irish, and Congolese heritage will make the event even more meaningful.
This is not just an exchange of gifts—it is a moment of joy, laughter, and connection, and we are excited for our families to experience this cultural celebration together!
