It began in Morocco… with a bowl of grapes and a little eavesdropping.

In July 2023, fresh off passing her French fluency exam, Serena made a quick stop in Morocco before heading back to France. Meanwhile, Oussama was celebrating the end of his graduate studies with a well-earned summer of travel before beginning his career.

One evening, on a hostel rooftop in Marrakech, Serena was chatting with someone when Oussama, snacking on grapes and watching videos, overheard her say she was from Canada. Curious, he joined the conversation.

They hung out once, exchanged Instagrams, and said goodbye like two people who assumed they’d never see each other again– because why would they?

But then came the Instagram DMs. And the long, novella-length message threads. And then Saturday video calls that lasted for hours. Fast forward a few months: Serena moved to Montréal for her first French-speaking librarian job, where Oussama already lived. They made it official in October 2023, proving that sometimes love starts with zero expectations and a really good Wi-Fi connection.

As for the proposal? Serena was at home in Toronto doing dishes in pajamas and yellow kitchen gloves, when she heard a knock at the door. She opened it to find Oussama- in a suit, fresh off a 6 hour bus ride from Montréal- asking her to go for a walk. At the end of that walk, he asked another question.

Tout a commencé au Maroc... avec un bol de raisin et un peu d'écoute.

En juillet 2023, alors qu'elle vient de réussir son examen de français, Serena fait une halte au Maroc avant de rentrer en France. Pendant ce temps, Oussama fête la fin de ses études supérieures par un été de voyage bien mérité avant d'entamer sa carrière.

Un soir, sur le toit d'une auberge de Marrakech, Serena discute avec quelqu'un quand Oussama, qui grignote tranquillement des raisins et regarde des vidéos, l'entend dire qu'elle vient de Canada. Curieux, il s'est joint à la conversation.

Ils ont traîné ensemble une fois, échangé des Instagram et se sont dit au revoir comme deux personnes qui supposaient qu'elles ne se reverraient jamais - parce que pourquoi le feraient-elles ?

Mais ensuite sont arrivés les DM Instagram. Et les fils de messages longs comme des romans. Et puis les appels vidéo du samedi qui ont duré des heures. Quelques mois plus tard : Serena a déménagé à Montréal pour son premier emploi de bibliothécaire francophone, où Oussama vivait déjà. Ils se sont mises ensemble en octobre 2023, prouvant que l'amour commence parfois avec zéro attente et une très bonne connexion Wi-Fi.

Pour ce qui est de la demande en mariage ? Serena était chez elle à Toronto en train de faire la vaisselle en pyjama et avec des gants de cuisine jaunes, lorsqu'elle a entendu frapper à la porte. Elle l'a ouverte pour trouver Oussama, en costume, tout juste sorti d'un trajet de six heures en bus depuis Montréal, qui lui a proposé d'aller faire un tour. À la fin de cette promenade, il lui a posé une autre question.
