Shea's online dating profile listed "I enjoy long hikes followed by a cold beer..." and this is exactly how we spent a lot of our time early on in our relationship. Follow our hiking and beer journey by visiting our favorite spots:

Hike and Beer Pairings

a) Makiki Valley Loop Trail (easy-moderate) - Located near Honolulu and Waikiki, this easy loop trail offers glimpses of the flora and fauna enjoyed in paradise. Park at the Hawaii Nature Center and follow signs to the trailhead. Be sure to lock your car and don't be afraid of the chickens in the parking lot. Pair this hike with a beer from ALOHA BEER (700 Queen St, Honolulu, HI 96813). Ask to sit outside in their patio and share a pizza with a friend.

b) Koko Head Stair Hike - (must be in good shape and unafraid of heights) - Get ready for a butt-kicking 1000+ stair hike to the top of Koko Head in Hawaii Kai. The hike itself takes about 1 hour - 1.5 hours round trip but requires plenty of stamina and water. After this hike ends, stop by Shimazu Shave Ice (not a brewery) in Waikiki and THEN stop for beers at Growler Hawaii OR Side Street Inn on Kapahulu (drink the "Side Street Inn Ale" brewed by Rogue). Of course, you'll order the fried rice, Korean-fried chicken, and pork chops from Side Street Inn! Be sure to share - portions are HUGE!

c) Pu'u Pia or Kolowalu Trails - Located literally within walking distance of Shea's house in Manoa Valley, we have done these two trails a number of times when we want to do a short and quick hike. Be careful though - if it has been raining, trail will be quite muddy. Bring shoes you don't really care about getting dirty OR be sure to have mud crampons or sturdy hiking shoes. After this hike, stop at Off the Hook Poke and then for a beer at Shea and Kyle's house in Manoa!

d) Olomana Trail - (HARD) Hike at your own risk. Actually, we would highly discourage you from hiking Olomana unless you bring US with you. It's important to have a fellow hiker who has done this trail before and we caution you to only go to the first peak. The hike to the first peak is not long, per se, but there are several areas requiring you to use ropes and climb up steep rock faces like rock-climbing. Follow this hugely accomplishing hike by ordering some take-out from Down to Earth Kailua and head for beers at Lanikai Brewing.

e) HiClimb - If you prefer to keep your rock-climbing indoors and away from near-death experiences, head to Hi-Climb, an indoor rock climbing gym in Kaka'ako (Honolulu). Pair this experience with a stop at Hana Koa Brewing, possibly our most visited brewery. Enjoy the yummy burgers or healthy-options like panko-crusted tofu salad.

Other notable breweries/bars on the island:

- BeerLab - The location of our first date ever! Enjoy their creatively-named beers and food from their down-to-earth pub near the University of Hawaii.

- Village Bottle Shop and Tasting Room (Salt at Kaka'ako)

- Honolulu Beerworks (Salt at Kaka'ako)
