In August of 2019, what started as a simple “Yo” from Alex to Sonia on Instagram would turn into a story neither of them could have imagined. Sonia, in true playful fashion, responded with “Sup wit it,” and just like that, their adventure began. A couple of days later, they were bar hopping through Memphis, laughing, bonding, and immediately planning to see each other again. Alex, who had just moved to Dallas, was only in town for a few days, but that was all they needed to spark something special. For the next few months, Alex made frequent trips back to Memphis. But eventually, the distance and the pressure of balancing a new business took a toll on him, and in the classic timing wasn’t right moment, they decided to part ways. Yet, even then, neither of them fully closed the door, both quietly hoping it might work out one day. Fast forward to March 2020, and with COVID looming, Alex and Sonia found themselves reconnecting, texting more frequently and, despite the chaos of the pandemic, realizing that maybe there was something worth holding onto. Alex, stressed with the challenges of his business, still made trips to see Sonia when he could, even if it was just once or twice over the next six months. Meanwhile, Sonia was in a season of personal growth. She had just graduated from undergrad in December 2019 and was preparing to start her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling that fall, balancing a new big girl job at Fairhaven and working on herself. By summer 2020, they were back to talking regularly, and this time, it just clicked. They admitted their love for each other and jumped into long-distance life for real—seeing each other every few months, navigating stress, business challenges, and the usual curveballs life throws at you. They learned how to communicate better, to see the best in each other, and most importantly, they made the choice to make it work, no matter what. In the summer of 2022, as Sonia graduated with her Master’s, it was time for a decision. Alex showed up, helped her pack up her life in Memphis (and sweet cat, Leo), and they made the big move to Dallas together. It was exciting, nerve-wracking, and full of hope. For Alex, having Sonia close felt like a huge relief after years of long distance, and Sonia, though sad to leave her family, was ready for this new chapter. Their first year living together was a mix of joy and struggle. Sonia started her first job in Dallas and quickly faced burnout and got COVID for the first time, while Alex’s business was struggling, leading to some stressful months trying to make ends meet. But they pushed through. Sonia found her dream job at a group practice, and Alex, after coming to terms with the direction of his business, sold it, giving them some breathing room for the months ahead. By end of 2023, things began to settle into place. They moved into a new apartment that felt like a dream come true, started traveling, enjoying life, and exploring Dallas in ways they hadn’t been able to before. They went to Puerto Rico, spent more time with family, and just soaked up the moments they had worked so hard to create. Then, in July 2024, Alex took things to the next level. Under a full moon at Reunion Tower, he got down on one knee and asked Sonia to marry him. Between tears of joy (and some chronic dry eyes from all the crying, let’s be real), Sonia said yes, and they celebrated with an unforgettable dinner at Crown Block. Now, with their own businesses thriving—Alex’s new venture and Sonia’s therapy practice—they are living the life they always dreamed of, filled with 2 cats (Leo + Pop), and the ups, downs, laughter, and love that have shaped them along the way. We can’t wait to celebrate our love and this journey with all the people who’ve been there to support us. It wasn’t always easy, but it was absolutely worth it.
