We both swiped right on Facebook’s dating feature and after a few days Steven messaged Todd. Facebook messages quickly became texting which then turned to FaceTime.
A couple of weeks later we decided to make a plan to meet and have an actual date in person. We talked about some options and agreed meeting in Philly would be best. Todd booked an Airbnb in case things didn’t go as we had hoped. When Todd pulled up Steven was waiting on the sidewalk and immediately Todd knew that there was something special about Steven. This would turn into a beautiful weekend going to the Philadelphia Zoo, Spruce Street Harbor Park and ended with Todd being Steven’s guest at a Memorial Day picnic.
Todd fell even more in love with Steven as he was introduced to Steven’s friends including Steven’s sponsor Chip. It was time for Todd to head home because his mother was taking care of Leo and Zev and Todd promised he’d be home by late afternoon. The sun was really bright that day. Todd let Steven keep his baseball hat so his keppie (Yiddish for “head”) wouldn’t get sunburnt. As Steven walked Todd to his car he asked about getting Todd’s hat back to him. “Well, I guess I’ll have to see you again to get it back” Todd said with a grin which was code for “Oh my goodness, this weekend was better than anything I could have imagined and I can’t wait to be together again”.
Todd booked a cruise for himself in January 2022 when cruise companies were offering incredible deals in an attempt to get people back on ships after Covid. An Alaska cruise was on his bucket list so he couldn’t refuse. The sailing was scheduled for the first week in August.
By early July Steven and Todd were having incredible times together and Todd knew his cruise was coming up. Ordinarily Todd enjoyed traveling alone and he wasn't planning on his cruise to Alaska to be any different.
Until…
”Hey, I have this cruise to Alaska coming up and the cabin is already booked. I don’t think I can go on this trip and have a good time without you. Want to come with me?”
So away we go! Together! With Steven’s dad and Todd’s mom both saying “you’re going to come home from this cruise engaged.” And both of us saying respectfully “no way. Maybe in the future but we’ve only known each other for three months. It’s too soon!”
We set sail from Seattle and were walking through the ship killing time before dinner. Four hours later we found ourselves in the jewelry store looking at rings. Thinking purely hypothetically "what would our wedding rings look like if we were to get married?"
Todd asked Steven “If we weren’t on the ship and went to a jewelry store in Philly, is this the type of ring you’d pick?”
Steven answered “Yes”
Todd then said “Well maybe we should get them now so we can remember our cruise?” A couple Champaign glasses later from the shop keeper and encouragement from a few other passengers who were watching this whole interaction unfold, Todd said “well I guess if we have our wedding rings does this mean we’re engaged?”
“Looks like our parents were right after all,” Steven said.
Time for a real proposal. Steven and Todd were taking turns driving to each other to spend weekends together. It was Steven’s turn to come to Todd’s house. Making the drive was still kind of new for Steven. It was also Labor Day Weekend which meant lots of traffic heading to the Delaware beaches.
Todd texted Steven a couple of times once he knew he was on his way reminding him to drive carefully and watch the signs so he didn’t miss his exit.
Queue the signs between Dover and Milford.
