“Our lifelong timelines were always parallel,
but it wasn’t until that fateful night in June 2019
when our paths would finally cross.”
Sumit was born in Danbury, Connecticut and Beau was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. Both were raised by loving families who were eager to support us each in our journey through life. Sumit spent most of his upbringing in Gallup, New Mexico where his family ran a motel business on Route 66. Beau spent most of his life in Sandy, Utah where his family built and managed apartment complexes. Both Sumit and Beau had similar goals in mind to pursue careers in medicine. Sumit went on to UNM for college and medical school. Beau went on to BYU for college and TUN for medical school. Their lives inched closer together when they both matched into nearby residency programs in Phoenix, Arizona. This is where our stories first intertwined nearly 5 years before we tie the knot.
Some say it was love at first sight. Some say there was a visible spark. And some say there was a shift in the cosmos. However, if you ask us... it wasn’t any of those things. Story is we sat next to each other at a meetup downtown for new physicians starting off in residency. We were at a brewery named Arizona Wilderness. Beau thought he was there to meet new coworkers from the children’s hospital. Sumit thought he was there to hang out with Amber (our honorary matchmaker) who was a friend from his medical school. Little did we know on that serendipitous night we would sit next to each other, shoulder to shoulder, and not even talk. Well, there was enough dialogue for Beau to quickly realize that Sumit was, in fact, not his coworker… so Beau kinda snuffed the conversation and turned his attention elsewhere. After all, they would “probably never see each other again.” Well guess what Sumit was thinking. This guy is a stuck up standoffish jerk (plus other explicit adjectives). As you can predict, sadly they went their separate ways.
Fast forward 12 months to summer of 2020. The pandemic was evolving and socializing was discouraged. Sumit and Beau were both stooping in isolation swiping through online dating apps yearning for connection, attention, friendship, and maybe even love. Sumit sent the first message by complimenting Beau on his clever bio, not remembering they had sourly met one year prior. Beau was keen to stalk their mutual friends before chatting so it had already clicked how they had known each other. Luckily, despite any preconceived perceptions, they still exchanged small talk until suddenly Sumit went rogue and disappeared off the apps. Thankfully, Beau understood the assignment and sought him out on Instagram. I know what you’re thinking; this love story is so millennial and you’re right—Beau totally slid into Sumit’s DMs. Soon thereafter, they exchanged phone numbers and the rest is history.
So this is where “Our Story” really begins because Sumit and Beau had a second attempt at fate and went on an actual real first date. We went to dinner at Clever Koi where Sumit held open the door like a gentleman and Beau wondered if he had found something special. We were wearing face masks until the server brought out our food so Beau had plenty of time to discover Sumit’s long lashes and chocolaty-colored eyes. His pager went off a few times to break the trance, but the conversation flowed with no end in sight. (Keep reading if you’re not bored yet.)
Sumit and Beau found true love within a few short months of dating. At that time, typical date activities and entertainment were not available. With so many shared interests and commonality, we made our own fun by cooking, hiking, kayaking, picnicking, gayming, swimming, road tripping, playing tennis, and testing out holding hands during strolls down Central Avenue. Sumit was the first guy that never got boring and Beau was the first guy who never stopped talking. After they both shared the “L” word 6 months into dating, it was time to finally meet each other’s families in 2021. Beau introduced Sumit to his parents on a quick trip home in the spring and Sumit introduced Beau to his mom during a family reunion that summer. With supportive parents, our relationship further strengthened on a solid foundation.
We both went on to graduate residency in June 2022. Beau became a pediatrician and his love letter to Sumit was staying in Phoenix an extra year to support him in becoming Chief Resident. Sumit’s love letter to Beau was ranking Utah as his most preferred program for fellowship at the U of U doing Pulmonary/Critical Care. Grab some tissues, because soon thereafter Sumit FaceTimed my parents asking their blessing to marry me (okay, okay, I can’t go on pretending this isn’t me writing).
At the end of a dreamy snowboarding/skiing trip in Japan, the planets and the fates and all the stars aligned on 2/3/23 (daww, my lucky number is 23) when Sumit bent down on one knee at the top of Shibuya Sky Tower in Tokyo. I kneeled down to match his level and of course answered, “YES!” We were both on top of the world, figuratively and literally. One week after returning home, I pulled off an unexpected reverse proposal for Sumit back at Clever Koi (remember our first date) by sitting at our original table covered with roses and photos of us.
