we're members here for a reason. don't sleep on the birds.
if you can, feed the lorikeets. i (sunshine) maintain that the day i fed the lorikeets will always be the happiest day of my life. and i'm getting married.
slyme and i love to walk in schenley park. when i lived in squirrel hill, we used to walk down to panther hollow lake and sit on the train tracks in the sunlight, sometimes with a picnic, and we'd peer into the lake and see the little bluegills flitting around in the shallow water, and we'd watch the red-winged blackbirds perch in the cattails and the whitetail dragonflies skim over the water. it's really beautiful.
go to giant eagle, buy a big jug of sugarfree lemonade and a packet of tropical punch koolaid powder. dump the powder in the lemonade and shake it - this is a beverage called "the liquid". put it in your backpack and walk down to the lake and drink it with someone you love. don't sit in the goose poop. there's a lot of it.
on one of my first dates with slyme, i took them to see my favorite piece here, "l'esprit de famille" by rene magritte. they looked at it for a long time. they wanted to understand it because they wanted to understand me. i watched them and i started to think that i loved them.
go see the painting! and understand!
if you have an ebt card, show it at the ticket desk to get in for $1.
do not miss out on this place. i nearly proposed to slyme here. it's a special place. and you get to ride TWO different trolleys!
have waffle house beforehand for the full experience. but be warned - if you're anything like me, the trolley rides may make you regret eating a big breakfast.
when i (sunshine) first met slyme, they told me they'd break up with me if i ever got tattooed anywhere other than dream machine. they weren't kidding. i went there and understood why.
you should go there and understand why, too. it really is all that.
check out their work @dreammachinetattoo on instagram
sunday, 9 am - 1 pm
go to the squirrel hill sunday farmer's market and have a hand pie or quiche from our friend lou the pie guy, a cup of coffee from matt at redstart, and some beautiful fruit from kit from dillner family farms.
this is my favorite farmer's market, but the bloomfield saturday market is also worth visiting.
one of the country's only bird-friendly coffee roasters. if you don't know what "bird-friendly" entails, our friends matt, missy, and clemmie will happily tell you while making you a really lovely cup of coffee.
get an oat milk cappuccino and head up the hill to walk around highland park reservoir for a true sunshine experience.
i fell in love with slyme when i worked here and they were my favorite regular. you'll love it too. sit at one of the low tables if you have good knees but sit in one of the beautiful booths if you're more like me.
sunshine's picks: zhuan cha or phoenix oolong if you like caffeine, iced tulsi basil and mint if you don't.
slyme's pick: sakuracha
say hi to dade and monica for me and ask them to make you something special. they will never let you down.
we insist you go here sunday morning before the wedding for the brunch buffet. it's all vegan and inside an antiques shop that will stun and delight you. when you're being seated, say hi to brian for us.
sunshine's favorite: the green beans and the broccoli and mushroom salad
slymie's favorite: the peanut noodles
$12/ person, cash only
for the true slyme experience: ask to be seated in karen's section and leave a nice tip on your table. order corned beef hash, sunny side up eggs, side of hashbrowns, rye toast, and black coffee.
for the true sunshine experience: order something weird and out of place off the huge menu, regret not just getting breakfast food, steal half of slyme's breakfast.
cash only, a true pittsburgh classic.
this place rules. close your eyes and point at anything on the menu and you'll be happy.
for the true sunshine and slyme experience, take a walk in the cemetery across the street and visit the sphinx, then go to apteka and order way too much food and several rounds of their incredible housemade sodas.
people's has the most spectacular and affordable lunch buffet. all hits, no misses. unlimited masala chai.
when we say this is where our love blossomed... we're not lying. quite literally the best ice cream you'll ever eat. bring a friend or lover.
sunshine's fave: small turtle sundae
slymie's fave: the burger :) (it's only $3.75!)
if you go here, you must try the rainbow buttermilk frozen yogurt (my favorite) or the brambleberry crisp (slyme's favorite).
slyme has about 30 of their cute little tasting spoons.
i (sunshine) met lena and james and fell in love with their biscuits at the squirrel hill farmers market and i'm so proud of them for growing out of a pop-up into a full brick and mortar. their biscuit sandwiches are not to be missed.
sunshine's favorite: sallie's snack, over easy egg, add a mushroom and oat patty (trust me)
slyme loves the savory scones here. i love the eclairs. pick up a little treat and then walk over to dream machine and get a tattoo for a perfect afternoon.
the line moves fast. this is the only place you should even consider getting a bagel in pittsburgh. go next door and browse artist and craftsman, then get a bagel and eat it at the park up the street.
sunshine's order: veggie sandwich on marble, no onion, add capers, tofu schmear plus an oat milk dirty chai latte. but you simply cannot go wrong here.
this is the best vietnamese spot in pittsburgh, hands down. the pho is stellar, but don't miss out on the split mixed rice and the tofu fresh rolls. have an iced coffee and get your mind blown. i've been known to have 3 iced coffees here and leave shaking with caffeine but entirely unrepentant.
bring cash or use their atm on site.
nowhere so beautiful to eat as here. always delicious, elegant but unfussy. say hi to our friend saraj if they're your server.
