Activities and Places to See

Leiden

Bootjes en Broodjes - a boat tour!

Daily boat tours in Leiden!
Ben helps during busier seasons at this location and it is a fantastic experience! Several current options during the day, including renting a boat and checking out canals yourselves if you prefer!
Perhaps we can arrange something for everyone while guests are here, but if we cannot, definitely take time to explore the water and learn some history about our key city!

Molen De Valk - a windmill experience

A short walk from the central station in Leiden, this windmill is great for when you only have an hour or two to explore the city of keys! For €7.50, you can climb to the top and learn Dutch history of the whirring windmills of Leiden. They even have small trinkets and gifts to remember your experience.

You can also stop by just to see a windmill up close from the outside as Amsterdam and surrounding cities do not have one for public access. Great just for a walk around Leiden.

Interactive Scavenger Hunt in Leiden!

We are creating a scavenger hunt for those interested in exploring the city of Leiden!

This section will be updated closer to the wedding date so that anyone planning on staying for a few days before or after can experience the lovely city.

It will require an application download, but is free to play!

The person with the most points from participating will also win a prize...

Walking Tour

If you prefer not to participate in the scavenger hunt, or simply prefer to explore with more leisure, walking tours are also a fantastic alternative. We don't have a preference for a company who leads tours, but there are some wonderful printed choices offered via the Visit Leiden website for a few euros, or a free option via reisroutes.be (the latter is in Dutch, but we have an English version available if you would like us to share).

If you do prefer to have someone help guide you through the city, we have a few friends that might be available provided you offer to by a drink or two along the way...

South of Holland

Madurodam

If you are only coming for a "little" bit and want to see everything Holland can offer. This is your change to see them all. Your itinerary will "shrink" in size once you got this one down.
Located in Den Haag, this day trip is a wonderful way to see a miniature version of the Netherlands just in case you have limited time to explore before or after the wedding!

Castle Keukenhof

Since outdoor activities are the best idea with the given circumstances, this is another great idea to explore the beauty of the Netherlands.

Even though spring tulips are the most popular and well-known flower of the Netherlands, late summer gives us the dahlia!

August through September, the gardens at Kasteel Keukenhof have over 100 dahlias planted within the estate gardens. It is a bit further than most of the other activities mentioned and most easily accessible by car, but you can also travel by bus or an afternoon of biking.

It is free to explore the gardens and free to park. There is a little café for coffee or lunch, and for a small fee you can look inside the estate.

Open Monumentdag

Amsterdam

Hopefully this will be possible this year, again with circumstances such will require reservations, it is unknown how many locations will partake, but walking routes are available (note: please don't try to cycle in Amsterdam, even Ben and I wouldn't dare in the center).

This is a heritage day in which the public can access and view many different monuments free of charge. Many locations also arrange for tours, activities, and music onsite.

This activity takes place the weekend following the wedding, so just keep that in mind!

Amsterdam is about 30 minutes via train from Leiden.
