Jim and Theresa met because of roller derby. In December of 2014, both officiated a Sur5al tournament. During one match up, Theresa was the penalty tracker (responsible for recording all the penalties) and Jim was the penalty wrangler (responsible for making sure Theresa heard all the penalties and recorded them). Theresa may have requested Jim repeat more penalties than needed just to hear his voice.

For some time, Jim and Theresa were casual friends, seeing each other at derby events but nothing outside of that. Three years later, they started commenting on each other Facebook posts a little more than usual, noticing things in common, and making each other laugh. Jim started messaging Theresa and Theresa started dropping heavy hints in comments on his Facebook posts.

Jim asked Theresa to officiate at the B-More Classic in 2017. There was some awkward but unmistakable flirting. Then Jim asked Theresa to go to dinner.

True to their love story, there was no grand proposal or getting on one knee. Jim and Theresa discussed whether they were ready to get married and decided it was time. They decided to have a date night at one of their favorite restaurants, Jim slid the ring they designed together to Theresa, and from that point on, they were engaged.
