For those planning to explore downtown DC while they are here, we highly recommend using the DC Metro system to get around. The system includes both rail and bus routes that can get you to nearly any location within the DC area.
NOTE: Metrorail transportation is available from both Dulles Airport (IAD) and National Airport (DCA) into downtown DC. If you are planning to spend a few extra days in the area before or after the wedding, you might consider booking a second hotel near either of these airports and using Metro to travel into the city.
Fares for Metro vary based on the service, ride length, day, and time you ride. Trip Planner is the best way to calculate your fare.
If you plan to take multiple trips using Metro while you are here, you should consider purchasing either 1-Day or 3-Day Unlimited Passes.
The SmarTrip app is the easiest way to pay for your Metro trips while you are here. The app is available from both the Apple App Store and the Google Play store. You can create an account prior to your visit and get everything set up for your trip beforehand, including purchasing those 1-day or 3-day Unlimited Passes. The app enables contactless "tap and go" payment, right from your phone or smartwatch, on Metrorail, Metrobus, and even SmarTrip-enabled parking lots.
If you would rather have a physical fare card, you can purchase one from a Fare Vending Machine at any Metrorail station.
