Our Wedding

When telling people how Tyler and I met, there are two versions that we usually tell, depending on how much time people have. Essentially, the short story is that we met and started dating in college, but the long story includes our meeting in Croatia as perfect strangers, yet seven days later we were dating... Our story is one that cannot be told without acknowledging the providence, grace, and love of God, and we pray that we reflect those traits and Christ Himself in our engagement and soon to be marriage, just as Christ will be our future bridegroom. We both ended up across the ocean on a spring break study abroad trip with UNC Charlottes Honors College. Tyler was the TA for the course, and was student teaching for his Special Education degree, so he couldnt make it to any of the class sessions before the trip. Its funny, because we lived in the same residence hall on different floors for two years. I know I saw and said hi to him dozens of times as the desk assistant to said residence hall, although we never had a real conversation. I remember thinking during the original information meeting for the study abroad, Wow, thats awesome that hes doing special education, but dang his hair could look so much better. In late February of 2023, I boarded a plane with one of my best friends Jessica, and we set off to Croatia together. In Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, we met up with all the others in the class, and we were each doing research on a subject of our choice. Over the course of the next couple of days, I started to get to know Tyler, and he even let me borrow his jacket on a guided tour when I was hopping all around because I was cold :)) My research was on churches in Croatia, and we went to a couple of different services in Zagreb and Split together. I really loved the way he prayed and focused on the Lord, and I got to hear a bit about how he came to know the Lord before one of the services. By the end of the first couple of days, I could barely sleep and barely eat because I was so excited to talk to Tyler and spend more time with him. We bonded over music during a bus ride to another city, explored castle ruins, and hiked up to a giant cross in the National Park located in Split. What we consider to be our first official date was on March 2nd, 2023. We managed to spilt off from the group, got some take out lunch, and sat on the pier and told each other our full testimonies. Then we walked to the nearby pebble beach and enjoyed the sunset together before running a mile together (we were a bit late because we lost track of time) to join the rest of the crew for a farewell dinner. When we got home, I think we both had some doubts on whether the Hallmark Movie that happened abroad would continue. Thankfully, those doubts were very silly :) We saw each other the first day we both were back, and there was only a few days in the months before I moved to Mississippi that we did not see each other and spend quality time together. Our depth and breadth of love for each other strengthened every day and continues to do so now. Our year of long distance was difficult, but the Lord grew us in many ways to prepare us for this next season, and we are grateful for the many intricate details and ways that the Lord provided for and confirmed our relationship. Tyler is truly my best friend and I feel incredibly blessed that God has placed him in my life to partner with to glorify His name! He truly sharpens me and inspires me to love others and the Lord more.

I truly think that this story can begin at any point, as I believe God has been leading me to Allie throughout my life. However every story must have a beginning and the best place to start was a random day in October of 2022 when I was working the desk at a residence hall on the campus of UNC Charlotte. One of my former honors college professors asked if I would be interested in being a TA for an upcoming study abroad trip to Croatia. I could not reply fast enough and became the trip’s TA soon after. In Allie’s story, she told our time in Croatia very well. During the first couple of the days of the trip, I was really nervous to do my job well, trying my best to be professional, share my time evenly with everyone, and keep my head on a swivel for things I should be helping take care of/keep everyone safe. But by the end of our second day in Zagreb, I noticed that Allie was the only one genuinely interested in getting to know me in the same way I was trying to get to know all the students. She asked about my student teaching experience and shared about her Honors Capstone Project with me, and I thought wait, maybe there is more here. Well anyways, fast forward to us starting to date, and the next three months were a whirlwind. Both of us were wrapping up and preparing to graduate, but we still made time to see each other almost every day. I had to say goodbye to the kiddos in my student teaching class, and transition into finding my first teaching job. Meanwhile, one of my roommates from college Ben planned to travel around Europe for about 3 months during the summer, and I had planned to join him for about a month of it. One day it came up in a conversation with Allie, and to this day we are not sure who suggested it, but by the end of the conversation, Allie was part of the trip. So recap, we met in Croatia, two months later graduated, then the next month we boarded a plane headed to Bordeaux, France and spent the next month traveling to different cities in Europe. First Bordeaux, then Bilbao, Oviedo, and a twelve day hike across the Northern Spanish Mountains called the Camino de Primitivo or the old way. We ended up in Santiago de Compestello near the Spanish coast, took a train to Madrid, then a flight to Wales for a week where we stayed with a family friend of Allie’s named Andy. He was gracious enough to take us around the north of Wales and day trips into Manchester, Liverpool, and Chester England, and then we flew back to the States. After that adventure I helped Allie move down to Jackson, MS to start as a trainee with Ballet Magnificat!. I moved into a new place in Charlotte, started my first teaching job at East Mecklenburg High School and Allie and I spent ten months doing long distance over the duration of the next school year. Looking back at all that God has provided for us, his blessing on our relationship, and the favor which has been extended over us is nothing short of wonderful and I am so blessed to have Allie in my life. She is my best friend, who I want to see after a long day, and the person I am most excited to do life with and love for the rest of our adventures here on Earth.
