Perry Hall High School gymnasium in the final weeks of June. No air conditioning. 100 grade school-aged children ready to go with their basketballs at 8am… The recipe for romance!
Veronica and Huy both began their Silver Bullets Basketball Camp coaching journey as volunteers, still students in high school but older than the oldest campers. In 2014, the two moved about the grueling days of camp with little time to spend around one another; Veronica coached the littlest campers and Huy coached the older ones. Despite the rare moments they spent in the same parts of the gym, both Veronica and Huy had caught each other’s eye… unbeknownst to the other. The entire two weeks of camp passed by with little interaction, and with no idea that they lived just ONE mile apart from each other their entire lives, they went an entire year without seeing each other again.
Flash forward to 2015. Another year of basketball camp counseling, another year bolder. Both Huy and Veronica were excited to see their counselor crush had returned for another year, and they both made an effort to be just a tiny bit closer to the other while still flying under the radar. They chose lockers in the locker room that were close to or next to one another. She let him borrow her pencil to write something down. They sat close by during camp counselor meetings. She stood on his side of the gym in support of him during Camp Knockout competitions. And yet, another two weeks of camp passed by and the two parted ways. That is, until July 4, 2015.
It was an overcast rainy day that threatened to cancel the Fourth of July party being hosted by the Camp Director. Veronica and Victoria decided they’d like to attend anyway, and their father drove them. It is safe to say that Veronica was shocked to see that Huy had attended the party as well (she thought he was too cool for those types of things). Not a fan of the cold water on a cloudy day, Huy didn’t spend much time in the pool, but he kept an eye on the antics and games as Veronica participated. As the night was winding down and the board games ceased, it came time to say goodbye to all the counselors for yet again another entire summer, both Veronica and Huy felt a little down. They had felt a little spark and didn’t want to say goodbye, but just didn’t know if the other was interested. So, they said goodbye and headed home.
Chatterbox Veronica found it hard to talk about anything but Huy for probably the next three days. Her prayers were answered though as she noticed she had an instagram message on the way home from her shift at Oak Crest, a message from Huy saying that she should reach out to him sometime. Veronica quickly responded with “Will do :)” and the rest is history. After what Huy calls their “Friend Date” and Veronica calls their “First Date” to the movies to see Jurassic World, things became official on July 12, 2015.
Veronica and Huy have spent 8 wonderful years together and now live comfortably in their Parkville home they purchased together in 2022 with their dog, Leo. They have visited 4 countries together, made practically a second home of their sister and brother in law’s home in Largo, FL that they visit annually, and they are enjoying their very short commutes to Parkville High and Oak Crest for work each day. They are so excited to officially become the family that they have already been for many years, and they thank you for all the ways you nurtured them in their journey to becoming Mr. and Mrs.!
