Rafa and Xochitl met through Xochitl's cousin Karen. They quickly became great friends, enjoying each other's company and flirtatious conversations. All of their mutual friends could tell there was something special between them. Sure enough, things took a serious turn on April 14th, 2015. Rafa y Xochitl se conocieron a través de la prima de Xochitl, Karen. Rápidamente se convirtieron en grandes amigos, disfrutando de la compañía del otro y de sus conversaciones coquetas. Todos sus amigos en común sabían que habría algo especial entre ellos. Y efectivamente, las cosas se volvieron más serias el 14 de abril de 2015.

2016 was the year of getting to know each other. Both in community college, we went through so many new experiences together. We became each other’s study buddies, best friends, and adventure partners. Our first year together was filled with exploring new places for the first time and trying so many new foods. We were inseparable and grew to love each other more. 2016 fue el año de conocernos más. Estábamos en el colegio comunitaria, viviendo muchas experiencias nuevas juntos. Nos convertimos en compañeros de estudio, mejores amigos y compañeros de aventuras. Nuestro primer año juntos estuvo lleno de explorar nuevos lugares por primera vez y probar muchas comidas nuevas. Éramos inseparables y crecimos a querernos mucho.

2017 was our second year in the relationship. Rafa transferred to Irvine for university, while I stayed behind to finish my education. The distance didn’t stop us. This year was filled with multiple trips back and forth from Irvine to Riverside. Our weekends were spent studying and enjoying each other’s company. That was enough for us. We definitely learned how to transition back into being independent, and though it was hard, it wasn’t impossible. It actually felt nice to miss each other throughout the week. 2017 fue nuestro segundo año en la relación. Rafa se transfirió a Irvine para la universidad, mientras que yo me quedé atrás para terminar mi carrera educativa. La distancia no nos detuvo. Este año estuvo lleno de múltiples viajes de ida y vuelta entre Irvine y Riverside. Nuestros fines de semana los pasábamos estudiando y disfrutando de la compañía del otro. Eso era suficiente para nosotros. Definitivamente aprendimos a volver a ser independientes el uno del otro, y aunque fue difícil, no fue imposible. De hecho, se sintió bien extrañarnos durante la semana.

We missed each other so much that I became pregnant and trapped him FOR LIFE. Haha, just kidding. Our relationship became even more real as I got pregnant with our son. We couldn’t wait to meet him and grow as parents. This was a new adventure we were about to conquer together. Nos extrañábamos tanto que terminé embarazada y lo atrapó PARA SIEMPRE. Jaja, es broma. Nuestra relación se volvió aún más real cuando quedé embarazada de nuestro hijo. No podíamos esperar para conocerlo y crecer como padres. Esta era una nueva aventura que estábamos a punto de conquistar juntos.

2019 was a challenging year and a huge transition period in our lives. We were both in school, working multiple jobs, and learning how to be parents. We didn’t have much one-on-one time together, but we created so many memories with our beautiful boy. Although it was a transitional time, we knew we had each other’s backs through it all. 2019 fue un año desafiante y un gran periodo de transición en nuestras vidas. Ambos estábamos en la escuela, trabajando en varios trabajos, y aprendiendo a ser padres. Tuvimos poco tiempo a solas, pero creamos muchos recuerdos con nuestro hermoso niño. Aunque fue un período de transición, sabíamos que nos teníamos el uno al otro en todo momento.

Do I really have to say much? It was a tough year for all of us! COVID sucked, making TikTok videos became a hobby, and wearing masks became an essential part of our wardrobe. However, through the rough times, we learned how to hold it down for one another and be strong—not just for each other, but most importantly for our little one. ¿De verdad tengo que decir mucho? ¡Fue un año difícil para todos! El COVID fue horrible, hacer videos en TikTok se volvió un pasatiempo, y usar mascarillas se convirtió en una parte esencial de nuestro guardarropa. Sin embargo, a través de los momentos difíciles, aprendimos a mantenernos fuertes el uno para el otro y lo más importante, para nuestro Alonzo.

Getting back on track to regular life. It was always nice to come home from chaos and find peace. We are each other’s safe place. This year, both of us found our careers and began building for our family. It finally felt like all our hard work and dedication was paying off. Volviendo a la normalidad. Siempre era agradable regresar a casa del caos y encontrar paz. Somos el refugio del otro. Este año, ambos encontramos nuestras carreras y comenzamos a construir para nuestra familia. Finalmente sentimos que todo nuestro esfuerzo y dedicación estaba dando sus frutos.

Life is great! We began dating one another again and falling more in love. We felt young again! We started traveling, seeing new places just like old times. Alonzo was keeping us busy with all his activities, and life felt so comfortable. ¡La vida es genial! Comenzamos a salir nuevamente y a enamorarnos más. ¡Nos sentimos jóvenes otra vez! Empezamos a viajar, conociendo nuevos lugares como en los viejos tiempos. Alonzo nos mantenía ocupados con todas sus actividades, y la vida se sentía tan cómoda.

Rafa proposed on a beautiful day at their favorite beach. It was definitely a surprise for Xochitl. Nonetheless, it was a beautiful moment shared with family. Rafa propuso matrimonio en un hermoso día en su playa favorita. Definitivamente fue una sorpresa para Xochitl. Sin embargo, fue un hermoso momento compartido con la familia.

Our favorite year thus far. God blessed us with so much this year. We’ve been growing individually and as one. Once again, we became parents, this time to a beautiful baby girl. We are complete and filled with so much love. Over the last 10 years, we’ve learned that in order to have a good relationship, there must be communication, respect, and, most importantly, love. We are each other’s best friends. We are the model of love that our kids will one day grow to want in a partner. We’ve grown so much since 2015, and we cannot wait to see what the future holds for us. Nuestro año favorito hasta ahora. Dios nos bendeció con tanto este año. Hemos crecido individualmente y al mismo tiempo como uno solo. Una vez más, nos convertimos en padres, esta vez de una hermosa niña. Estamos completos y llenos de tanto amor. En los últimos 10 años, hemos aprendido que para tener una buena relación debe haber comunicación, respeto y, lo más importante, amor. Somos los mejores amigos del otro. Somos el modelo de amor que nuestros hijos algún día querrán encontrar en una pareja. Hemos crecido tanto desde 2015 y no podemos esperar a ver lo que el futuro nos depara.
