Yen met Thuy at age 14 through a mutual friend. Despite living far apart, they always made time for each other, with Yen often visiting Thuy’s hometown of Avondale, LA. Bonded by their shared sense of humor and outlook in life, they have always encouraged each other to be strong, resilient women. Born just three days apart, they have continued to maintain their 30 year friendship and share an annual tradition of taking a trip together to celebrate their birthdays.
Yen met Thai freshman year of Catholic high school, where they instantly bonded over the shared experience of being lovingly forced by their parents to attend an all-girls school—and having to endure the infamous hunter green plaid uniform. Yen was immediately perplexed (and impressed) upon learning that Thai was the second oldest of 7 kids in the family, all named Thai. Despite her tiny frame, Thai was a fearless ball of fire with glasses. 30 years later, she is still a fearless ball of fire. Thai is also Allison's (Yen's daughter) godmother.
Yen and Linh’s friendship began in the fourth grade, making Linh one of her oldest and dearest friends. While Yen’s parents worked weekends at the restaurant, her mom would often drop her off at Linh’s house, where they would sing karaoke, play outside, and experiment with Linh’s mom’s makeup. Even though they went to different high schools and colleges—and Linh eventually moved to California—they still kept in contact with each other. Yen often visits Linh when she’s in San Francisco. Yen has a lot of fond childhood memories with Linh that they still laugh about to this day.
Lawrence met Ryan in their junior year at UT Austin, where fate placed them as neighbors in the dorms. Lawrence introduced Ryan to Ultimate Frisbee, a game that quickly became more than just a sport for him—it became a passion. With his Mangrove tree-like wingspan and ability to play defense, Ryan earned his nickname "Tree". He eventually joined the team, and they played together for the remainder of their college years. Ryan eventually moved to El Paso, TX after graduation to be closer to his extended family. Their friendship continued to grow stronger over the years. Through life events, they often confided in each other and provided support during difficult changes.
Lawrence (Larry) and Seho (Sam) became friends during their junior year in Princeton High School (NJ). They spent many afternoons after school playing pool at the Jewish Center with a few other close friends on Princeton University campus. Lawrence has always admired Seho's brute honesty when discussing any topic with anyone at any time:). Time has passed but their friendship hasn't changed. Seho is considered one of Lawrence's oldest friends.
Lawrence and Carl played on the Princeton High School tennis team during freshman year. They would often be paired together during practice. Carl had a notable calming presence and an easy going attitude. Their friendship grew during junior year around the same time Seho and Lawrence began forming a clique and Carl joined. Lawrence would frequently visit Carl's home and hung out with his parents who were extremely welcoming. Carl is also considered one of Lawrence's oldest friends.
