Things to Do

Puebla Sights and History

Puebla is known as one of Mexico's "Pueblo Magicos," meaning "magical towns," thanks to it's rich culture, history and colonial architecture.

Puebla was originally founded in 1531 by Spaniards as a city exclusively for European colonizers. The famous Battle of Puebla took place here on May 5, 1862 when the Mexicans fought an invasion by the French to protect the city. It was a motivational victory for the country during the second Franco-Mexican War. This is why we celebrate Cinco de Mayo!

The Spanish and French colonial influence lives on in the Baroque, Renaissance and Classic architecture and hundreds of historical buildings and churches lining Puebla's cobblestone streets. The historic city center (where we will be staying) was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

Below are some of it's most notable sites and attractions.

El Zocalo y La Catedral

The Zocalo, also known as the town square, boasts a large baroque-style fountain and the Cathedral. Each of our hotels is a 2 block walk from here.

El Cajellon de los Sapos

One of Puebla's most photographed streets, el Cajellon de Los Sapos ("Street of the Frogs"), is a popular antique shopping area by day and provides a lively musical atmosphere at night. The Cartesiano Hotel is around the corner from this street.

La Biblioteca Palafoxiana

Puebla is home to the oldest library in the Americas - the Biblioteca Palafoxiana. Because of this fact, it has been declared Memory of the World.

El Mercado Parián

El Parián is a handcraft market in Puebla and one of the most-frequented tourist attractions. Here you can find Puebla's famous Talavera pottery, along with leather, wood items, jewelry, silver and traditional candies.
