Where is the wedding being held?
Our venue is Blue Venado Seaside - a private, beachfront venue we have exclusive use of for the entire duration of the wedding. It is located in Playa del Carmen, the next large city just South of Cancun.
But hang on.. where exactly is Playa del Carmen?
Playa del Carmen is on the East coast of Mexico, situated on the beautiful Yucatán Peninsula - home to beaches, cenotes and tropical jungle.
Do I Need a Visa?
If you have a regular passport issued by Australia or the United States, you do not need a visa to visit Mexico for tourism or business purposes (for up to 180 days). You will get a Tourist Card at a Mexican point of entry upon arrival, or you can get it online before you travel.
When should I arrive?
The wedding will be held on Saturday 6th April, from around 4pm onwards. We will plan to arrive into Cancun roughly the 28/29th Mar 2024 and spend about a week around Playa del Carmen to prepare. We expect most people to arrive into Mexico some time between the 2nd and 4th of April, with some kind of celebratory drinks likely to happen on the night of the 4th.
The Easter public holidays are conveniently the weekend before the wedding, meaning if you choose to arrive the weekend prior, you'll have better bang for your buck with regards to annual leave.
Is Mexico safe to visit?
It sure is, especially in the hotel zones throughout Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cabo san Lucas. Mexico is to the USA what Bali is to Australia. Unfortunately, you'll only ever hear the negative news stories. This is not to say there isn't crime in Mexico, but it is much more concentrated in places like Mexico City and Tijuana.
What about gifts? Should we bring them?
We do not expect any gifts! We're fully aware that as a destination wedding everyone will already be travelling, so your attendance is gift enough.
For those that insist, please see the 'Gift Registry' page of this website for our Travelers Joy Honeymoon gift registry.
What language is spoken in Mexico?
Spanish is the primary language spoken. We recommend learning a few key words/phrases such as........................
- Hello = Hola
- Goodbye = Adiós
- Thank you = Gracias
- Where is the bathroom? = Dónde está el baño?
- 2 more tequilas please, my friend! = Dos mas tequilas por favor, mi amigo!
What is the dress code?
Semi formal to formal attire. Dressy, of course, but it is a beach wedding after all!
Are things expensive in Mexico?
No! Quite the opposite. Accomodation in Cancún is usually all-inclusive in the hotel zone, and much cheaper than other parts of the world. Our experience in the past included 25c tacos, $2-3 massive burritos, $1 corona beers & $2-3 tequilas.
What is the currency?
Mexico uses the Mexican Peso. The peso varies a little, but as of Nov 22, the exchange rate is approx. 100 AUD = 1250 MXN/ 100 USD = 1950 MXN
