Getting Around

We compiled a list of tips and tricks during our recent visit to Taormina to ensure that our guests have the best possible experience! Please read carefully through the following information:

Rental Cars

Car Rental Considerations:

- You DO NOT need a rental car if you only plan on staying in Taormina during your time in Sicily! Only rent a car if you plan to travel around Sicily by car before or after the wedding.

- Otherwise, taxis or car services are recommended for travel between the airport and Taormina, as well as within Taormina.

International Drivers License:

- Confirm if you need an International Drivers License before renting a car.

- Example: A rental with Europcar required it, but Avis (Maggiore) didn’t.

Tolls and Payment:

- If you are renting a car, ensure you have euros for tolls.

- Rental cars might not include an Italian Easy Pass equivalent.

Driving in Taormina:

- The roads can be challenging, so using taxis for local travel is advisable.

- Most hotels charge a fee for parking the car. We had to pay 20 euros per day for our car to sit in the parking lot. We did not want or need to drive the car in Taormina once we arrived!

Taxis

Uber and other ride-sharing apps do not operate in Taormina. However, hotels and restaurants can assist with calling taxis for you.

Walking in Taormina

Walking Considerations:

Taormina is a mountainous area with VERY steep inclines. When deciding whether a location is within reasonable walking distance, consider the incline.

We quickly learned after our first night in Taormina that a 25-minute walk is not ideal for dinner! We were exhausted and drenched by the time we arrived.

General Rule of Thumb: If the walk is more than 10 minutes, take a taxi!

Cable Car (Funivia)

The cable car is a great way to get to and from the beach area. You can pay for your ticket at the kiosk for about 10 euros roundtrip and they run every few minutes.

To the Beach: Taormina has a convenient cable car (Funivia) that connects the town with the beach at Mazzarò. This is an easy and scenic way to reach the coast.

To the Center of Town: The same cable car can also be used to travel between the beach area and the town center, making it a great option for avoiding the treacherous drive or walk and enjoying beautiful views.
