The majority of people in Cyprus do speak English but always respond very enthusiastically when tourists say a few Greek words! Here are some basic Greek words and phrases you might find useful on your trip:
Hello: Γειά σου (YAH-soo) or simply Γεια (yah) for a less formal greeting. When addressing a group, say Γεια σας (YAH-sas).
Nice to meet you: Χάρηκα πολύ (HA-ree-ka po-LEE)
How are you?: Tι κανείς? (tee-KAH-nis)
Good morning: Καλημέρα (kah-lee-MER-ah) – use this greeting until noon.
Good afternoon/evening: Καλησπέρα (kah-lee-SPER-ah) – for late afternoon, dusk, and evening.
Goodnight: Καληνύχτα (kah-lee-NEEKH-tah) – say this before going to bed.
Thank you: Ευχαριστώ (eff-kha-ri-STOE)
Please/You’re welcome: Παρακαλώ (para-kah-LOE) – it means both “please” and “you’re welcome.”

What is your name?: πως σε λένε? (pos seh LEH-neh)
Excuse me: Συγγνώμη (see-GHNO-mee) – use this when trying to get someone’s attention or apologizing.
