BRING BINOCULARS! Anywhere along the Kohala coast (ideally between Kawaihae and Kapa'a Beach Park), you can watch whales spout and breach. Mahukona and Kapa'a Park are excellent spots to enjoy the show. January is peak humpback whale season! It's amazing!
The Pololu Valley offers a great lookout, hike, and the black sand beach. The hike will lead you through some spectacular views of the valley and cliffs. The end of the hike leads to the black sand beach and ancient forest at the valley floor. It's about 1 mile each way and about 400 feet of elevation drop and gain. The parking is limited! Best to go in the morning.
An absolutely lovely place to snorkel (if no surf and calm waters), whale watch, and take in views of Maui. Mahukona is the site of an old sugar cane shipping port. Amber's dad, Thomas, can be found here each morning on his long ocean swims.

Kohala Mountain Road is a great way to experience the natural beauty of the Big Island. This road, officially called Route 250, travels from Hawi south to Waimea over Kohala Mountain (~20 miles in length). The scenery is gorgeous! Go on a sunny day to drive past mountain pastures, cinder cones, rolling hills and tree-lined mountains with stunning views down the Kohala coast.
