Traveling to Corfu

While there are no direct flights to Corfu from the United States, Corfu has an international airport (CFU) with direct flights from many European cities in addition to Athens, such as Rome, London, Paris, or Berlin. For those who might be visiting family or exploring the country before the wedding, you can take a domestic flight or drive and take a ferry to Corfu from the port in Igoumenitsa.

Getting around the Island

There are 3 primary ways to get around the island: car rental, taxi, or bus.

Corfu is a large island, so if you would like the flexibility of exploring at your leisure, we highly recommend booking a rental car. You can reserve one online through companies such as Enterprise, Hertz, Cosmos, or United Rental Car for pickup at the Corfu Airport. We recommend booking your rental car in advance, especially if you need an automatic vehicle.

There is a taxi hub in Corfu town, or your hotel front desk can help you arrange a taxi as needed. Please note that Uber and Lyft are not on the island.

You can also get around by bus. For bus routes and information, take a look at Blue Bus (City Bus) and Green Bus (Long Distance Bus).

Travel Tips and Good to Know

Check Your Passport

Your passport must be valid for at least six months after your travel date.

Currency

The currency of Greece is the Euro. In our experience, credit cards with zero foreign transaction fees, are the best options as they generally offer great exchange rates. Its a good idea to notify your credit card company that you will be traveling to Europe so that your card isn't declined. We also recommend bringing multiple credit cards from different networks (e.x. Visa or American Express) in case a certain card isn't accepted. However, not all merchants (such as taxi drivers) accept credit cards, so be sure to have some Euro with you.

Download an Offline Map

We highly recommend downloading an offline copy of a map of Corfu on Google or Apple maps. That way, you can have access to a map regardless of cell service.

Drinking Water

Drinking the tap water on Corfu is not recommended. It wont make you sick if you accidentally drink some or use it to brush your teeth, but it is not meant for large consumption.

Electricity

Europe has different voltages than the US, so be sure to bring European adapter that is compatible with the voltage needed for the electronics/appliances you will be bringing with you.

Kerkyra

Kerkyra is the Greek name for Corfu and the names are used interchangeably. Corfu/Kerkyra is also the name of the main town. So, if you are driving around the island and see signs for Kerkyra, this will lead you back to Corfu Town.

Phone Plans

Some carriers include texting and data, while others require a daily international pass. We recommend talking to your carrier ahead of time so you can plan accordingly.

Plumbing

In most places on Corfu and in Greece, you are not allowed to flush toilet paper because of the small sewage pipes. You must dispose of it in the bin next to the toilet.

Returning to the US

To expedite passport control, you can download the official Customs and Border Protection app called CBP MPC . If you do this ahead of time, you will be able to go through a much shorter line when you return to the US.
