Our Wedding

It was Stanford's "field day" for new graduate students, one of those getting-to-know-you events that you're a bit embarrassed to even attend. For the most part it was a pretty disappointing event--just some people sitting on a lawn eating Costco muffins and chips. Annie was sitting with her new friend Jeremy Calder, also from New Mexico, when up sauntered Tyler with a few other new students. When the group sat down, Annie saw to her shock that this interloper appeared to be wearing a shirt with his own likeness emblazoned on its front. A conversation was struck up. Tyler was utterly unfazed by Annie's snide remarks about the shirt and asked her to elaborate. And oh, Annie elaborated! But he seemed to think she was alright anyway.Tyler texted Annie regularly for the next week or so inviting her to various things. Only much later would Annie learn that all of those texts were actually mass texts he had sent out to everyone he had met--they weren't intended to be romantic at all. What a happy mistake on her part.

We met at Stanford on 9/24/11.

Oh, how young we were.</a> This is from January 2012, just after we spent winter break in New Mexico together (because both of our families live there, not because we planned to go together). Tyler had decided he wanted to learn to play ukulele and Annie decided to go along for the ride. This video was shot in Annie's dorm room on Stanford campus at around midnight. In Annie's opinion, this clip may be the most adorable piece of documentation that remains from the days before either party had acknowledged that they were even MAYBE interested in each other romantically. In retrospect...it's blush-worthy.

We want you to wear something that will make you feel like a million bucks. That's our dress code. For us, that means formalwear, but we wouldn't presume to know what that means for you. Parts of the wedding will be outside, so (in true Bay Area fashion) we suggest you layer. We expect it to be hot while the sun's out.Also: if you know us, you know we love colors and patterns--so colorful patterns are encouraged. Also bowties, headdresses, tassels, and bells.

It's a long weekend in San Francisco! We hope you use the three days of festivities to delight in the alternately chic, vexing, futuristic, twee, and romantic area we call home. Lyft is basically always available in the Bay Area, so know that you can always get around that way. If you're coming in from out of town, we recommend renting a car so you can explore the Bay in its entirety and get to some nature spots in addition to the city attractions. Caltrain will get you from city to city if you prefer to take public transportation and/or bike.There is ample parking at Kohl Mansion but no public transportation that will get you directly there. Carpool if you can (for the fun of it if for no other reason), and make sure you either plan to use a car service or designate a driver!

We loved this hippy-dippy Bed and Breakfast when we visited for Annie's birthday. Rooms are very limited, so if you're interested, book ahead. Expect existential conversations with fellow life wanderers over breakfast. Recommended for Haight-Ashbury nostalgics and wannabes.

The Red Victorian

There are three airports in the area: San Francisco (SFO), San Jose (SJC), and Oakland (OAK). San Francisco is closest to the venue, and also (in our opinion) the most elegant. There's a yoga room, and the seating areas look like they were designed by the Jetsons' interior designer's hip cousin from LA. San Jose is a smaller airport; if you're staying in San Jose or the Peninsula, it's a quick and easy option. Oakland is more of a hike--and traffic can be quite bad getting in or out of the East Bay. However, Southwest has a much stronger presence in Oakland than in either of the airports, and tickets are sometimes cheaper. Long story short: any airport of those airports will work, but be sure to map the potential route to your hotel before you book. SFO is very near to the venue; SJC and OAK are probably a 1-hour drive away (without traffic).

A mid-range hotel option! The Four Seasons is very close to the 101, so it's great if you'll be shooting north to San Francisco or south to San Jose at various points during your stay. Poor Stanford students are known to make pilgrimages to the bar to observe the wildlife in their natural habitat. The Rosewood also has a lovely pool area, so if you plan to hang out at the hotel and enjoy the weather and a view of the rolling hills, this is the place for you!Our room block here will be available until 45 days before the check-in date. The Rosewood

This is where we got engaged! We were at a wedding fair of theirs for the free champagne when Tyler popped the question inside a photo booth. Happy memories.This place is smack dab in the middle of Union Square, a touristy spot with lots of shopping and foot traffic. A cable car stops right outside. The hotel itself is historic. If you'd like to stay in a more standard tourist spot with access to San Francisco's attractions, check it out.We have a block of 15 rooms reserved here; it's the "traditional" room at $269/night. Available Friday through Monday. Identify yourself as part of the Atura-Bushnell wedding party--and make sure you reserve by August 1! That's the cut-off date.

The wedding isn't until the afternoon, so be sure to partake in a San Francisco hipster classic: the Sunday Brunch. You'll find countless delicious locations to have brunch, including Stackz, Brenda's, or Hobee's the local diner chain.

Sunday Brunch

Afternoon coffee at our favorite local coffee joint. We were regulars here throughout grad school, and continue to be patrons to this day. Their custom blends have a fabulous range of flavors, and if you take cream this is the place to be. There are also locations in San Francisco.

Philz Coffee

We have wonderful memories of this dining experience in Saratoga. Great for an intimate and fun 3-course dinner, or just cheese and chocolate, on Friday, Saturday, or Monday. Make reservations because it can get busy!

La Fondue

If you're coming in for the weekend, definitely get to the beach! Ocean beach is where San Francisco meets the sea, Pacifica is a lovely town just around the mountains, San Gregorio is a beach we frequented in grad school, and Santa Cruz is known for its world-class surfing!

We went on a hike here the day after we were engaged to get married. We find it a lovely and fascinating nature park that is deceptively close to the hustle and bustle of Silicon Valley.

The wedding will feature dance karaoke hosted by DJ Purple (of Rudy's fame). Get ready for saxophone solos.What's dance karaoke, you ask? It's karaoke that's specifically intended to be entertaining rather than punishing to onlookers. So. Yes to your favorite banger. No to maudlin show tunes and the Star-Spangled Banner.
