Our Ceremony: The Anand Karaj (Blissful Union)

We are so incredibly excited to be getting married in a traditional Sikh ceremony called the Anand Karaj, which means "Blissful Union." This ceremony is deeply spiritual and takes place in a Gurudwara, which is the Sikh place of worship (think of it as our temple or spiritual community center).

Since many of you might not be familiar with a Sikh wedding, we wanted to share a little bit about what you can expect and the meaning behind the different parts of the ceremony. We are so honored that you will be joining us for this incredibly special and sacred moment in our lives!

Before the Ceremony Starts: Arriving at the Gurudwara

When you arrive at the Gurudwara, there are a few things to know:

· Removing Shoes: You'll be asked to remove your shoes before entering the main hall (called the Darbar Sahib). There will be racks provided for this. This is a sign of respect when entering a sacred space.

· Covering Your Head: Everyone entering the Darbar Sahib is required to cover their head. This is also a sign of respect for the Guru Granth Sahib Ji (our holy scripture, which is treated as our living Guru). We will have head coverings available for guests who need them (usually scarfs or bandanas), but feel free to bring your own if you prefer!

· Washing Hands/Feet : You might see people washing their hands or feet in a designated area near the entrance. This is for purification before entering.

· Entering the Darbar Sahib: As you enter the main hall, you'll see the Guru Granth Sahib Ji placed on a raised platform at the front. It's customary to respectfully bow towards the Guru Granth Sahib Ji upon entering and before sitting down. This is a gesture of acknowledging the spiritual wisdom and guidance within the scripture.

· Sitting on the Floor: Everyone sits on the floor during the ceremony. This is a really important principle in Sikhism called "Pangat," which signifies equality – everyone sits at the same level, regardless of their status or background. Chairs are usually available for elderly guests or those with mobility issues if needed. Traditionally, seating is separate for men and women, usually on opposite sides of the hall.

Key Parts of the Anand Karaj Ceremony:

The ceremony is conducted in front of the Guru Granth Sahib Ji and is led by a Granthi (a reader/custodian of the scripture). Here are the main sections:

· Kirtan (Hymn Singing): The ceremony begins with the singing of hymns (Shabads) from the Guru Granth Sahib Ji. This devotional music is sung by Ragis (musicians) and helps create a peaceful, spiritual atmosphere for everyone. It's a beautiful way to quiet the mind and feel present.

· Ardaas (Congregational Prayer): A collective prayer is offered to God, asking for blessings for the couple and the congregation. Everyone stands up for the Ardaas, with hands folded as a sign of respect. At the end of the Ardaas, the congregation collectively says "Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh" (meaning "The Khalsa belongs to God, Victory belongs to God") and then "Bole So Nihal" (meaning "Whoever utters shall be happy"), to which the congregation responds "Sat Sri Akal" (meaning "Truth is Undying"). You are welcome to join in if you feel comfortable, or simply stand respectfully.

· Palla Ceremony (Joining the Couple): This is a symbolic moment where the bride's respected elder places one end of a decorative scarf or cloth (called a Palla) into the groom's hand. The other end of the Palla is held by the bride. This signifies the couple being linked together, ready to embark on their spiritual journey as a unit, guided by the Guru.

· Lavaan (The Four Rounds): This is the central and most significant part of the Anand Karaj. The Granthi reads four specific hymns (called the Lavaan) from the Guru Granth Sahib Ji. After each verse is read, the couple walks around the Guru Granth Sahib Ji clockwise, with the groom leading and the bride following, holding onto the Palla.

Each round of the Lavaan has a profound spiritual meaning, guiding the couple on how to build their marriage on a foundation of love, devotion, and spiritual principles:

· First Laav: Focuses on following the path of righteous action and duty within the marriage, committing to a life of virtuous conduct and divine grace. It's about starting the journey with a commitment to spiritual discipline and living a good life together.

· Second Laav: Describes the longing of the soul for the divine and the effort needed to overcome the ego. It's about deepening the connection not just with each other, but also with the divine within and around them, shedding selfishness.

· Third Laav: Emphasizes detachment from worldly attachments and material desires, focusing on love for the divine and finding true spiritual connection. It's about prioritizing spiritual growth and devotion in their shared life.

· Fourth Laav: Represents the achievement of spiritual union and perfect bliss, where the couple's souls merge with each other and with the divine. It signifies the state of complete love, harmony, and fulfillment in their marriage, guided by the Guru's teachings.

Walking around the Guru Granth Sahib Ji symbolizes the couple centering their lives and their marriage around the spiritual guidance of the Guru.

Anand Sahib: After the Lavaan, a specific hymn called Anand Sahib ("Song of Bliss") is sung. This hymn expresses the feeling of complete joy and spiritual fulfillment experienced when one is united with the divine. It celebrates the bliss of the spiritual union that the couple has just entered into.

Final Ardaas and Hukamnama: A final Ardaas is offered, followed by the Granthi opening the Guru Granth Sahib Ji to a random page and reading the first verse on that page. This verse is called the Hukamnama (the Guru's command or message) and is considered the divine instruction or blessing for the day for the couple and the congregation.

Karah Parshad: After the Hukamnama, a sweet, sacred pudding made of flour, sugar, and butter (called Karah Parshad) is distributed to everyone in the congregation. This is a blessed offering and symbolizes the equality of all people, as everyone receives and shares the same blessed food regardless of their status. To receive it, cup your hands together and the server will place a portion in your hands. It's respectful to accept it and eat it.

Congratulatory Greetings: The formal ceremony concludes after the Karah Parshad is distributed. The couple and their families will then receive congratulations from the congregation.
