The Shores: A Collection of Our Most Treasured Beaches
The true alure of this area is Northern Michigan's beaches. These freshwater coasts will charm you with their crystal clear water and vibrant sunsets. Note that vehicles require park passes for entry. Fires are permitted only on the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore beaches, and must be kindled between the water’s edge and the first dune—city parks are off-limits.
Esch Road Beach: Also known as Otter Creek Beach, this serene shoreline rests near the mouth of Otter Creek as it gracefully merges with Lake Michigan. The creek’s shallow waters provide a perfect playground for splash-loving children and beckon young explorers to wade upstream into the heart of the forest. The beach offers ample sand for your cooler and chairs, making it a prime spot for a day of relaxation. To reach this haven, drive south on M-22 from Empire and turn right onto Esch Road. The beach features both paved and unpaved parking, along with basic facilities. https://maps.app.goo.gl/KRwqZBqFLnaXQjVZ7
Platte River Point Beach: Nestled near the Platte River Campground, this enchanting beach lies at the confluence of the Platte River and Lake Michigan. The beach is a popular destination for those finishing a tubing or canoeing adventure down the river. It’s an ideal spot for families, with the added bonus of picturesque views of the Empire Bluffs. Access the beach by taking Lake Michigan Road off M-22 near Platte Lake, and drive straight to the lakeshore. The beach is equipped with paved parking, picnic tables, and basic facilities. https://maps.app.goo.gl/QUTvZHf4fkRpGKMP6
Good Harbor Beach: Often referred to as the Copacabana of Sleeping Bear Dunes, this expansive beach warmly welcomes the crowds that are drawn to its vast stretches of soft sand and gentle, child-friendly shoreline. The beach offers breathtaking views of North Manitou Island and is an idyllic location for a sunset bonfire. To visit, take either County Road 669 (Bohemian Road) or 651 (Good Harbor Trail) from M-22 near the northern edge of the Dunes parkland. The beach provides paved parking, picnic tables, and basic facilities. https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZDhqDZFVDuFLAym86
Honorable Mention: Empire Town Beach—Located right in town, next to a charming park, this beach is a local favorite for its convenience and beauty. Has a playground, and does not require a NPS park pass.
This is our favorite coffee spot in the area. The Mill boasts a spacious riverside deck, perfect for savoring your cup amidst nature’s tranquility, and an inviting fireside lounge indoors for cozying up with a warm brew. Every cup of coffee is freshly made and the baked goods are crafted from scratch, adding a touch of homemade magic to the experience.

Immerse yourself in nature by embarking on a waterborne adventure. You have the choice between two river systems (Crystal or Platte rivers), each offering the opportunity to glide through the serene waters. However, for those who wish to indulge in a tubing experience, Riverside Outfitters is your go-to. We highly recommend setting out early, especially if your journey takes you along the Platte River, to ensure you have ample time to bask at the beach.

Biking Near Sutton's Bay/Traverse City:
There is a FANTASTIC bike ride on a paved path between Sutton's Bay and Traverse City. We spent several hours on this trail picking apples, foraging in the edible garden, and stopping at wineries/breweries.

The Empire Bluff Trail is a captivating 1.5-mile round-trip journey that winds through a picturesque beech-maple forest, open meadows, and rolling dunes, all leading to a breathtaking vista of Lake Michigan. Among the many trails to explore, this one stands unrivaled in its beauty. The terrain is hilly, adding a touch of adventure to your trek. Most kids should be ok doing this hike. To begin your ascent, take Wilco Road off M-22, about 1.7 miles south of Empire. Be sure to have your National Lakeshore pass at the ready. After your hike, descend into the charming village of Empire, treat yourself to some ice cream, and let the cool waters of Lake Michigan soothe your feet.
