Arrail d'Ajuda is a charming little town nestled in the southern region of Bahia.
The nearest airport to this tropical paradise is Porto Seguro (BPS), a domestic airport that serves as your gateway to a slice of Brazilian heaven.
For those joining us from the UK, the most convenient route involves catching a direct flight from London to São Paulo GRU or Rio de Janeiro GIG, with options from carriers like Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, and LATAM. There are direct flights to Porto Seguro both from Sao Paulo & Rio de Janeiro. The alternative option are indirect flights via Europe, which is usually more affordable but of course longer ( TAP, KLM)
If you're traveling from Australia, your best bet is to fly with LATAM or QANTAS via Santiago, Chile, before arriving at São Paulo (GRU). Alternatively, there's an option to route through Auckland, Santiago, and then on to Brazil ( Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro), although this route takes a bit longer.
São Paulo GRU has ALOT more options for direct flights to Porto Seguro BPS. Rio de Janeiro GIG, only has 1 flight which is at silly o'clock (23:00). This was a recent change, and pretty sure it's affected ALOT of us. My advice if flying from Rio, is taking the flight via Sao Paulo ( It's a 50 mins stopover). When booking your domestic flights, ensure that you select São Paulo Guarulhos (GRU) as your departure airport, as there are multiple airports in São Paulo (unless you plan on spending a few days exploring this vibrant city, in which case you can choose any airport that works for you). Same goes for Rio de Janeiro, there are multiple airports so keep an eye on that.
Arraial D'Ajuda can be accessed by ferry from Porto Seguro. The ferry departs from Balsa Para Arraial D' Ajuda and transports both cars and pedestrians. The ferry towards Arraial D'Ajuda costs R$5, however your return journey to Porto Seguro is free.
The easiest way to get to your hotel is :
1. Get an uber/taxi to the ferry terminal
2. Cross the ferry as a pedestrian
3. When at the other side, get another taxi to your hotel. There's also the option of the mini vans, but if you have suitcases I would avoid this, at least at peak times ( More about this in the Arrail d'ajuda page).
P.S. Make sure you have cash for taxis/Mini vans!
Whilst this is the easiest and quickest way ( 7 minutes to cross), don't be expecting a luxury ferry ride ( lol).
If you have lots of suitcases, I would avoid this method and opt for the option of booking a transfer in advance. The reason why I recommend booking a transfer in advance is so that you don't get over charged. When I was visiting in July the prices varied from R$150- 300. Speak to your hotel and also nearer the time I will be reaching out to see if anyone else still needs help.
The negative side to getting an uber/taxi across is the waiting time you will be sat at the ferry port! Remember this weekend is a Bank holiday in Brazil so at peak times you might be waiting for a while to board the ferry. This is why the taxi/ubers charge so much, because they are sat not making any money elsewhere.
