They say that no two grains of sand are alike, and the same is true for the best Lake Tahoe beaches. Each boasts different panoramas, personalities, and even sun exposure (hint: beaches on the western side of the lake see more early morning sun, and those on the east side are ideal for catching the sunset). Some, like Kiva Beach and Nevada Beach, are dog friendly. Others, like Emerald Bay State Park, offer boat camping and you-can’t-find-anywhere-else views of Fannette Island and the Vikingsholm Estate. There’s no shortage of water sports here, and if you’re looking for more exhilarating Lake Tahoe summer activities, like access to boating and parasailing, you’ll find that, too.

Places to Ride at Lake Tahoe

Biking

The Pope – Baldwin Bike Trail is a paved 3.6 mile gentle, rolling path that winds from 15th St in South Lake Tahoe to Spring Tract on Hwy 89. Along the way it passes Pope Beach, Camp Richardson, Kiva Beach, the Taylor Creek Visitor Center and Baldwin Beach. All offer additional opportunities. Anderson’s Rental is located at the beginning and has bikes that range from full suspension mountain bikes to kid bikes to kid trailers.

Road Biking

Riding around Lake Tahoe is a right of passage for many cyclists. The highways around Lake Tahoe are narrow and there aren’t many sections with bike lanes. Traffic is much heavier on weekends and the Emerald Bay area is always crowded, but the scenery is . Riding in an event Like America’s Most Beautiful Ride or Tour de Tahoe are good introductions as support staff are available along the way.

Mountain Biking

The trails adjacent to the Corral Loop and Power Lines trails offer mountain biking for just about every skill level. The climb up to the paved road to Corral Loop and Sidewinder will get your heart rate up (Unless you’re a downhiller riding in a vehicle to the start!). There’s also a connector to Armstrong Pass. Lots of features have been built into the trails by Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association volunteers in cooperation with the USFS. Fun trails for those with intermediate plus skills. Family fun can be found on the Railroad Grade. The trail head is a short, mostly flat ride from the parking lot. It’s a terrific introduction to single track trail and there are options off it, too.

Testing your big boy or big girl bike skills is a snap on Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. A primary trail begins at the summit of Luther Pass at an elevation of 7740’ and climbs to 8950’ before plunging down 6 miles through pines, over boulders and finishing on banked (exfoliated granite) dirt turns to the Tahoe Basin. There are a number of exit points. There are a lot of ways to make this ride more punishing / challenging. Have at it!

Within its campus, you’ll also find the only comedy club at the south end of the lake, The Improv at Harveys. If you visit in the summer, Harveys hosts the Summer Concert Series in their outdoor amphitheater where big acts like the Scorpions and Duran Duran have played.

Harrah’s Lake Tahoe

Right across the street, you’ll find Harrah’s Lake Tahoe, the most popular casino-resort in Lake Tahoe. In addition to the table games such as roulette, craps, & baccarat along with progressive slots, you’ll find a host of amazing dining options, the PEEK nightclub, and the hip Cliché Lounge. For music lovers, the South Shore Room hosts some of the biggest performers up to present day. Need to unwind a bit more? Get a massage at Reflections The Spa or lounge by the indoor pool.

Bally’s Lake Tahoe

Bally’s Lake Tahoe Resort Casino & Spa Lake Tahoe

Most Lake Tahoe visitors are looking to enjoy the outdoors in what is the ultimate alpine paradise in any season. After a full day of hiking, skiing, or any other mountain activity, Bally’s Lake Tahoe makes sure your stay is in comfort. From the Opal Ultra Lounge night club for party-goers to the indoor grotto-like pool, there’s a lot of choices. Featuring a steak house, buffet, craft beer, & assortment of adult gaming options, you’ll be set for your stay in Tahoe.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe

For those that embrace the motto “carpe diem” even at night, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is your spot. As one of the most recently refurbished resorts on the south shore, the buzz and excitement is electric just like the Hard Rock brand in places such as Las Vegas, New Orleans, and now Tahoe. The Hard Rock gives a nod to the location’s roots. You’ll find memorabilia from stars like Elvis Presley, back when it was known as the Sahara. The hip new digs feature a classic steak room, oyster bar, “hot” new restaurant called Fire Break, & an intimate showroom named Vinyl.

North Tahoe Casino Scene

The north shore of Lake Tahoe features a host of quaint & cozy casinos albeit less unique experiences in and of themselves. Here’s the rundown of those classic spots in places like Incline Village and Crystal Bay.

Crystal Bay Casino Lake Tahoe

Built in 1937, the “CBC” as known by locals has renovated its accommodations & re-opened in 2003 but still holds to its old school Tahoe feel. On the casino floor, the walls are adorned with natural stones and a giant (fake) Oak tree standing from the middle of the pit spreading its branches over the table games. Besides the classic games such as blackjack and craps, the Crystal Bay has two performance venues. The red room provides an intimate setting while the Crown Room is their premier spot with a capacity of 550.

Jim Kelley’s Tahoe Nugget

One of the oldest family-owned casinos in the ENTIRE state of Nevada, they still follow the philosophy of providing good food and drink at an affordable price. This cozy casino features the latest in slots and a few table games to enjoy. But the real star is the “awful awful” burger that they’ve been serving for more than half a century. The “awful awful” moniker is short for awfully big & awfully good.

Tahoe Biltmore Lodge & Casino

If you’re looking for vintage décor and atmosphere, the Tahoe Biltmore Lodge & Casino is your best bet. Known as the “Bilty”, it has some of the classic meal deals you’d find at casinos in Nevada. For example, on Mondays, their café hosts a $2.22 Monday breakfast special. And if you feel like truly celebrating a deep powder day at one of Tahoe’s many world-class resorts, every afternoon their bars host happy hour. Also, if you’re up late, be sure to look out for the local spirit known as “Mary.” According to local lore, she supposedly haunts the halls.

Grand Lodge Casino at the Hyatt

Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe

Sitting on the northeastern edge of Lake Tahoe in the quiet town of Incline Village is the Grand Lodge Casino at the Hyatt. Those with a sophisticated palette and price is no object will find this casino & resort perfect. Offering several gaming options on the 20,000 square foot casino floor, take a dip afterward on their private beach. If visiting in the winter, enjoy hot cocoa by their cozy outdoor fire pits gazing upon the waters. Luxury amenities do come at a price: mandatory nightly $36 resort fee in addition to the cost of the room.

Drinks

South Lake Tahoe Beer Trail

South Lake Brewing Co.

Recently opened near the Y, South Lake Brewing Co. introduces a line of taps inspired by the natural beauty and essence of Lake Tahoe. Owners Chris and Nicole Smith pour their love for their hometown into their recipes and customers can really taste the subtleties and nuances in the beer. Sample the Angora IPA with hints of mango and pine or Marlette Blonde with notes of pear, honey and tangerine.

Lake Tahoe AleWorX

Another new brewery near the Y and a second location at Stateline, Lake Tahoe AleWorX allows for the customer to be in control of their craft beer experience. The taproom displays a selection of brews where visitors can pour their own pints. Customers can also be walked through the brewing process and see what makes AleWorX unique. The Cali Common is a citrusy pilsner handcrafted with fresh Lake Tahoe water, which goes well with the in-house menu of small bites and pizzas. Check out the new, second location, now open at 31 US Hwy 50 Stateline, NV.

The Hangar Taproom and Bottle Shop

The Hangar is a taproom and bottle shop with a unique beer selection. With 30 rotating taps and a can and bottle selection, we’re pretty sure you can find something you like. As long as it’s, beer. Also check out our dog park, corn hole, bocce, and patio.

Cold Water Brewery & Grill

South Lake Tahoe’s “Best Overall Restaurant,” as voted by the readers of the Tahoe Tribune. Cold Water Brewery & Grill is a favorite of local’s and tourist alike because of its premium handcrafted all-grain beer that’s brewed on-site. Their beer goes perfectly with their seasonal driven menu that’s been dubbed “California comfort food at its best.” CW is ideal for your large party gatherings and those small intimate dinner dates in their rustic cozy setting.

Sidellis

Sidellis is a relatively new establishment that has quickly become a local favorite and the owners really make an effort to get to know the customers’ interests and tastes. With a rotating variety of taps, the brewers like to experiment with unique flavor combinations and profiles. Some examples include the Mangoana, a mango habanero white ale, and the Nut’Hella, a chocolate hazelnut amber ale. Their food menu also has something for everyone, from classic bar food fare to specialties such as the Peri-Peri spiced pulled pork.

Stateline Brewery & Restaurant

Stateline Brewery & Restaurant serves filet mignon, prime rib, ribs, halibut, lobster tail, rotisserie chicken, pasta and gourmet pizzas. They also offer a full bar with a great selection of microbrews and wines. There is an event, private room available for weddings, groups and other special events.

Craft Cocktails

1. Riva Grill

Riva Grill is in the marina off of Ski Run Boulevard. It’s touted as the premier lakefront location in South Lake Tahoe. They have a big indoor and a big outdoor patio. Yet we still recommend that you make a reservation during the busy season. You can valet your car for free or walk to it if you are staying in South Lake Tahoe. On Wednesdays, you can take advantage of their $5 off Wet Woody’s – their signature cocktail summer drink. If Wet Woody’s is not your thing, you can grab another craft cocktail. Take a look at their menu.

2. The Landing Tahoe Resort and Spa / Jimmy’s Restaurant

When you want to escape the crowds in South Lake Tahoe, come to this hidden gem located right next to Edgewood. Jimmy’s Restaurant is part of the Landing Tahoe Resort and Spa. They are a pet-friendly hotel and you can even bring your best friend to the patio. Jimmy’s Restaurant is right across from the beach. Make sure to bring your camera or have your iPhone handy so you can record that amazing sunset or moonrise.

Happy hour is from 3pm – 5pm. Check out their entire

dinner menu

and

drinks menu

3. The Loft

Located in the heart of the Heavenly Village, you’ll want to go there for night life, atmosphere, and entertainment. It goes late into the night with live DJs. They have a full bar and an award winning wine list. Check out their food menu. The unique thing about The Loft is that you can make your own marshmallows. This makes it a great place to go and hang out after a day on the slopes or head there for dessert. If you enjoy a little bit of magic, then The Loft is for sure your best bet in South Lake Tahoe.

Food

Picture of Food

Katie & Charlie's Favorite Restaurant

Artemis Lakefront Cafe is my frequent go-to recommendation whether you want great views or just great food. From babba ghanoush and gyros to baklava, you won’t find a menu like theirs anywhere else on the entire lake (except for their other location, because when the food is this good, you give the people what they want). Enjoy Greek and Mediterranean dining from the comfort of their Lakeview patio, you can even catch some live music.

Fast Food

Lake Tahoe has all the franchise fast food restaurants one might expect, McDonalds, Taco Bell, Five Guys, Panda Express, Chipotle, Jack in the Box and Subway. It also has some long time locally owned spots. Izzy’s Burger Spa has been dispensing burgers, fries and sodas for years as has the Sno-Flake Drive-in and Big Daddy’s Burgers and the Burger Lounge. There are a number of locally owned Mexican fast food restaurants. The Brothers Burrito House, Jalisco’s, and Jalapeno’s Taqueria have served fast Mexican food for years.

Breakfast

Terrific affordable breakfasts are available in the four casinos, IHOP and there are five Starbuck’s to choose from, but there are some truly unique breakfast restaurants at Lake Tahoe. Bert’s Café and Ernie’s Coffee Shop have been serving up American style breakfasts on the South Shore for ages as have Heidi’s, the three Red Hut Cafés and the Driftwood Café. Those looking for a small, somewhat Bohemian breakfast experience with great coffee will find it at the Keys Café. Restaurants in this category also serve lunch.

Lake View

The Beacon sits on the beach at Camp Richardson and features expansive views of Lake Tahoe and the Carson Range. For those that want lots of boats in their lake view Riva Grill is sure to please and same for nearby Artemis Lakefront Café. The Beach House sits on Lakeside Beach, it’s sans roof, but enclosed in glass with wonderful views of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra. Jimmy’s Restaurant is across the street and shares similar views. Fine Dining with incredible views can be found at the top of Harveys Tahoe in the Sage Room and top of Harrah’s in Friday’s Station. Want the elevated lake view and Sierra view without being in a casino and fine dining atmosphere, you’ll find it at the casually elegant Chart House. Old Tahoe granite and wood ambiance with huge picture windows can be found on the beach at the Restaurant at Edgewood. The Bistro and Brook’s Bar and Deck at Edgewood have views, too.

Van Sickle Bi-State Park is an easy walk from many Stateline area properties and offers a variety of options that fit different ages, fitness levels and goals. There are a limited number of free parking spots available and improved toilets. There’s a fun photo op on the official “stateline” between California and Nevada on the paved road up to the trailhead. Many of the trails have beautiful Lake Tahoe views. One that offers especially good views is only about 20 minutes up the trail, a top huge boulders left over from the last glacial period. The reward for walking 45 minutes over switchbacks is rewarded with a small waterfall and for those that want the big up and down, Van Sickle is a connector to the Tahoe Rim Trail.

Mt. Tallac the signature peak of the South Shore, offers the most unobstructed views of Lake Tahoe outside of the Heavenly Gondola and mid-station observation deck. Getting to the summit and back to your car can be a challenging all day event, but even going part of the way offers rewarding adventures, incredible views, wildflowers, small mountain lakes and lots of interesting geologic formations. Out and back is almost 11 miles and the elevation gain is over 3,000 feet. The trailhead and parking is located off Hwy 89 across from the Baldwin Beach entrance.

The hike to Round Lake via Big Meadow has a short, steep entry and then is flat and rolling with loads of wild flowers. The entry is short enough that smaller children can be carried and the meadow offers awesome child adventures with small trout in the creeks, dragon flies buzzing about and loads and loads of wild flowers. There are big boulders at Round Lake to flop on and enjoy a picnic. The total distance to Round Lake and back is about 6 miles and the elevation gain is about 1200 feet. There are designated parking spaces along Hwy 89.

Walking the Lam Watah Nature Trail offers the opportunity to follow the historic footpath of the Washoe People who lived at Lake Tahoe during summer for thousands of years. It’s an easy, flat walk of just under 3 miles out and back. Strollers and wheelchairs with all terrain tires can traverse it, too. The reward at the end is you’ll find yourself in the sand at Nevada Beach with terrific views of Mt. Tallac and loads of blooming lupines along the way. There are also interpretative signs along the trails with interesting details about the area. Parking is at Kahle Drive off Hwy 50 in Stateline. There are improved toilets available at the parking area.
