Q + A

What should you Wear?

California Beach Casual - what does that mean? We want you to be comfortable at our wedding. The Ceremony will be on the beach (IN the sand); the Reception will be right next to the Ceremony, outdoors on a porch. For this time of year in California, may we suggest the following attire: Folks who'd like to wear a dress can wear sundresses, lightweight separates and heels, flats, or wedge heels and optionally can swap them for bare feet or the flip flops we'll provide for the beach Ceremony. Male guests can wear a light dress shirt with khakis or other lightweight slacks; jackets and ties are optional. For all attendees, a lightweight jacket and a hat should cover both ends of the weather spectrum in a San Diego May - a bit windy/chilly and very sunny.

Driving on the Base

The Wedding is on the US Navy's North Island Naval Air Station. This is the birthplace of Naval Aviation, the homeport tof two nuclear aircraft carriers, and several fighter and helicopter squadrons. If you are a Top Gun fan, several scenes from the latest Top Gun movie were filmed right here on the base!

When you approach the main entrance to the base, called the VADM Stockdale Gate, make sure you are in the FAR LEFT lane, and turn into the Visitor's Parking Lot. There, you will see someone holding a sign for our Wedding and will have your base access pass. Unless you already have a CAC card (and if you don't know what that is, that means that you don't have one), you MUST have this access pass to get on the base. (Read the section on Base Access on instructions for applying for you access pass.)

Pull out of the Visitor's parking lot exit and make THREE left turns to get back to the base's main gate. Stop at the stop sign before the gate guard and wait until the guard waves you forward. Show them the pass (and they may ask for your drivers license). If asked, tell the guard that you are a guest at a Wedding on Breakers Beach. (Be nice to the guards - they carry loaded guns...)

Once on the base, be very aware of the speed limits and all traffic signals. Pedestrians have the right of way on the Base. Also, for your awareness, the legal driving limit for Blood Alcohol Content is 0.6 - less than off of the Base. Part of the Base rules is that you drive from the gate to the Wedding and back out the gate without "touring" around the base. Also, outside of the wedding venue, taking pictures or videos on the base is not allowed. (These details are included because I am sponsoring your access to the base -meaning that if you get pulled over for any reason, Rich gets the phone call from base security. If this occurs during our wedding night, we will quickly forget who you are...) :)

When should I arrive?

Since you will be accessing an active military base, the security status could range from a quick check at the gate (just a few minutes) to a higher level of security (each car is inspected), depending on what global events are occurring the weekend of our wedding. We strongly recommend planning to get to the Main Gate by 3:00 pm. This should give you sufficient time to get your base access pass at the visitor's parking lot, get through the gate, and drive the 10 minute drive to the venue on the beach. YOU MUST APPLY FOR YOUR BASE ACCESS BEFORE 28 February.

How do I get a Base Pass?

Read the section titled: "Access to the Base - YOU MUST READ THIS NOW!" It is critical that you submit your information by the date listed here.
