We decided to call Lake City home in 2020. We love it for its serene natural surroundings and strong sense of community. It is a small town of 400 residents surrounded by BLM land that welcomes thousands of adventure-seeking tourists in the peak season. Get ready for starry nights, small town vibes, and- if you’re up for it- outdoor adventure.
Airports
There are lots of options to get to our remote town, depending on how you want to travel.
Gunnison is the closest airport, a little over an hour away. This is also the closest city to Lake City, and where we stock up on groceries (see “Stocking Up” below). It is smaller than Denver and Albuquerque and may not have as many car rental options. Most flights to Gunnison require a stop or plan change in Denver.
Denver is the closest major airport, about 5 hours away. It is easier to find a cheaper flight, a direct nonstop route, and more car rental options than Gunnison, but has the trade off of a longer drive.
Albuquerque is another major airport, about 6 hours away. Again, it may be easier to find a cheaper, more direct flight and more car rental options compared to Gunnison. And of course, going this route offers New Mexico scenery if you’re looking to make a road trip out of it.
Montrose & Grand Junction may also be viable options, however there have been construction issues on HWY 50, and closures will make travel times difficult.
Lake City is in one of the most remote counties in the lower 48 states, which makes for beautiful wilderness, but not necessarily convenience. You can get many small items at our store or the Country Store in town, but if you’re looking to stock up on groceries or a favorite shampoo brand, you’re better off shopping in Gunnison, the nearest small city, about an hour north.
Lake City does not have any formal hotels. The majority of lodging options will be found from mom & pop establishments, many being rustic cabins.
Here's just a selection:
Wagon Wheel : Closest accommodations to the venue, rustic cabins located next door.
Gowdy Properties : Gorgeous rooms in historic house, reminiscent of an BnB.
Matterhorn Motel : Motel style rooms with outside entrance.
Lakeview Property Management : Manages an array of properties in the area, and often has availability that you won't find perusing the internet.
AirBnb & VRBO have some rental options as well. Some may require nightly minimums, and some places are large cabins worth sharing.
We know that travel to our small town can be tricky and expensive. If you're open to sharing, here is a spreadsheet to help you coordinate a ride or place to stay with another wedding guest.
Even if you aren't 100% sure you want to share, put your name down anyway. These things work best when there are options and possibilities to explore.
