We can't wait to celebrate with you!
Block Island is one of our favorite places in the world and we can't wait to share it with you. We encourage exploring the island for all it's beauty and fun. Whether that be bike riding, hiking, horseback riding, bird-watching, snorkeling, fishing, parasailing, kayaking, sailing or Dana's favorite activity- the beauty in doing nothing on Scotch Beach, you really can't go wrong!
If you’re looking for natural peace and quiet, this 190-acre parcel on the northeast part of the island contains some of the island’s most spectacular scenery. To reach the trail, look for a post marker on the right side of Corn Neck Road, about 3 miles from town and across from a big yellow farm house. Turn right down the dirt road and go straight for one-third of a mile until you reach a parking area. If you travel by bike, leave it at the rack at the trailhead and head in on foot. About 1/3 mile down the trail, you’ll come to an intersection. Go right and you’ll get to a beautiful sandy beach that’s off the beaten path enough to be almost deserted. Turn left and you’ll walk along picturesque bluffs and take in gorgeous vistas all around. At the top of the trail is what locals call “the maze”, a series of interconnected, unmarked paths where you can wander to your heart’s content. During the fall, the maze is said to be one of the best spots in North America to catch a view of migratory songbirds.
If you’re looking for a relatively easy walk through a variety of natural settings – from wooded to open, from towering bluffs to a pristine beach – Rodman’s Hollow is a can’t miss place. Rodman’s Hollow is a glorious 230-acre glacial outwash plain with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and access to Black Rock Beach, filled with native trees and shrubs lining a path that varies from flat to steep. It’s a great place to hunt for glass floats – the 550 handcrafted numbered orbs that have been hidden around the island as part of an interactive art experience known as the Glass Float Project. To get to Rodman’s Hollow, walk down Black Rock Road off of Cooneymus Road. In a quarter mile, you’ll see a wooden gate and turnstile that’s the entrance to the trail. When you get to the split, go left to walk the bottom of the hollow and to get to another trail leading to Fresh Pond. Or take a right to go up a knoll and you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful panoramic vista. The trails come together again to return to Black Rock Road. If you turn left and continue down the road, you’ll find another trail that takes you all the way to secluded Black Rock Beach.
Some people say the beach at the base of the 200-foot tall Mohegan Bluffs is the most beautiful on the island, harboring a secluded, if rocky, place to swim and surf. It’s a bit of a climb to get there, however, with a set of 141 steps leading down to the sand. Make the effort and the payoff is spectacular, with clay cliffs that offer one of the most dramatic views of the Atlantic in all of Rhode Island, and a vista that can extend all the way to Montauk on the tip of Long Island. The steps are easy to find – there’s a plaque at the Bluff overlook, commemorating the history of the bluffs (Mohegan Bluffs got their name from a Native American battle dating to 1590, where 40 members of a Mohegan raiding party were said to have been driven off the cliffs to their deaths by the Manisseans, the victorious natives of the island). Mohegan Bluffs is also the 5th stop on the Block Island Bicycle Tour.
Beyond a large playground, a skate park, tennis courts and basketball courts, Ball O’Brien is a great picnicking destination, with charcoal grills, a covered picnic pavilion, and restrooms. There’s plenty of parking.
If a drizzle of local honey on a fresh-baked scone is your idea of heaven, you can find heaven on earth on Wednesday and Saturday mornings from 9 to 11:30am at the Block Island Farmers' Market. (Word to the wise, come early before the scone lady sells out.) With its many fruits and veggies, artisan cheese spreads, salsas, shellfish and more, the Market is a veritable festival for foodies. But wait, there's more. Not only are there plenty of edibles to delight your taste buds, there are also arts and crafts, music, kids, dogs and a laid-back community atmosphere that makes you smile just being there. Rain or shine, the Market is held every Wednesday in September at Hotel Manisses from 9am-11:30am and Saturday mornings at Legion Park from 9am-11:30am through the first weekend in October!
Taking a break out of your regular workday world gives you time to ponder the big questions of life. On Block Island, there’s a narrow circular walkway lined with stones called the Sacred Labyrinth, where you can unplug from the ubiquitous distractions of the modern world and enjoy the peace and quiet of a walking meditation. When you get to the center of the circle, there’s a place to sit and enjoy the views overlooking Sachem Pond, North Lighthouse and the ocean beyond. Listen for the sounds of the birds—and possibly for answers from the universe. And be sure to look inside the wooden box tucked under a crabapple tree. You’ll find notebooks where previous visitors have recorded their own personal thoughts brought on by their visit to this special spot. Share your own musings if you’re so inclined. Like answers to life’s most pressing questions, the labyrinth is not the easiest thing to find. Travel up Corn Neck Road toward the North Light and keep your eye on the stone wall on the west side of the road for grey weathered stairs painted with a red arrow and the word Labyrinth. Climb the stairs and enjoy the journey—wherever it takes you.
Water Street, with its views of Old Harbor, unique shops and wonderful restaurants, is the heart of Block Island, and the perfect place to reward yourself for completing the walking tour! Whether you’re looking for a t-shirt or a one-of-a-kind painting, you’ll find it here. And if you’re not a shopper, we’ve still got what you want — from sweet treats to the local daily catch.
