The Carolina Renaissance Festival grounds are only 1 hour away from Ballantyne. Jousting, falconry, tomato tosses, games, rides turkey legs and much more. Some guests will be dressed in full medieval attire, but that is optional.
Open Saturdays and Sundays throughout October and November, rain or shine. Tickets can sell out, so it's advised to purchase in advance (about $30 each). Almost everything on the grounds takes cash only.
US National Whitewater Center

Adventure park with whitewater rafting, zip lining, hiking and mountain biking trails, climbing, ropes course and more. 30 minutes from Ballantyne.
The North and South hiking trails are about 5.5 miles long.
High Shoals Falls Loop

2.7 mile loop to a waterfall in South Mountains state park. Rated moderate, elevation gain of 557ft. 1.5 hour drive from Ballantyne.
Stone Mountain Loop Trail

Tough but rewarding 4.5 mile hike with sweeping views and a waterfall, about 2 hours from Charlotte.
McDowell Nature Preserve

Closest hiking to Charlotte featuring a nature center and the 4-mile Shady Hollow trail. 25 minutes from Ballantyne.
Seven Oaks Preserve Trail

Moderate 4.6 mile trail along Lake Wylie which circles around the Daniel Stowe botanical gardens. 35 minutes from Ballantyne.
Mint Museum Uptown

Art museum in downtown Charlotte. Open 11-6 Tuesday - Saturday and 1-5 Sunday. 20 minutes from Ballantyne.
