There are three main ways to get to the island. Driving around lake Huron, driving to Tobermory and taking the Chi-Cheemaun or flying to Sudbury and renting a car.
We recommend anyone in southern Ontario takes the route around lake Huron as the Chi-Cheemaun can be unreliable. For anyone outside of southern Ontario or who would find it difficult to drive for over 5 hours we recommend flying to Sudbury.
This is the recommended route for anyone living in southern Ontario. It takes five and a half hours to drive this route from KW providing you don't hit traffic.
If you leave early in the morning (by 5:30) you should go through Toronto as it is quicker if there is no traffic. Otherwise take the back roads past Orangeville up to horseshoe valley just past Barrie before rejoining the main highway.
Below we've linked some indigenous gas stations, good rest stop if you need an extra break and a link to the route on google maps.
A little restaurant and gift shop just before Sudbury. Not a cheap place but it is unique and interesting to visit if you haven't been before.
Usually has the best gas prices. Also has a convivence store.
Gas station and trading post.
We only recommend flying if you're coming out of province or the drive will be too much as it is by far the more expensive option for anyone living within 6 hours of the island. For anyone taking this route we recommend you either arrange for someone to pick you up and drop you off at the airport or rent a car from Sudbury for the weekend.
We don't recommend taking this route because it makes the trip longer and is more expensive. That being said it does give you time out of the vehicle while still traveling, lets you see more of Manitoulin Island and takes you on a route that is usually free from traffic.
Taking this route will at least take 6 hours from KW. If you don't mind the extra time and cost then it's not a bad option. You can find the google maps link below along with a link to the site where you can book tickets.
There are lots of Inns, hotels and motels relatively close to Ireson Island along with several great looking Airbnbs. We've listed the best options below along with a link to the Airbnb search for the are on the wedding weekend.
3 start hotel on Manitoulin located in little current right along the water front. It's a 15 minute drive from the birch island marina. It has an outdoor pool and a restaurant.
There are lots of great Airbnb options within 30 minutes of the birch island marina. It's recommended that you don't book something further than Espanola to the north or the north eastern section of Manitoulin Island to the south in order to keep your drive time reasonable. This link will take you to the Airbnb search for the wedding weekend.
A 2 star hotel located in Espanola. It's a 22 minute drive from the Birch Island marina. It has a restaurant attached.
Located just outside of Sudbury 1/3 of the way to Espanola. This is a pretty cheap location with not much close by but will cut about 20 minutes off of the drive to the marina. Well rated with clean basic rooms.
There are lots of Airbnb options in the area although hotels are cheaper than most options.
