Things to Do

If time allows, we have included some of our favorite places in the San Diego area for you to visit. Let's dive into the breezy, sun-kissed, and laid-back world of San Diego. Here's your guide to making the most of your time in "America's Finest City":

There are almost too many things to do in San Diego! To make it easier to decide what to do, and to limit the amount of driving that you do while you’re here (don’t get caught in rush hour traffic on weekdays from 3:30pm - 6pm!!), we’ve broken the activities up into the general areas of SD. Starting from Downtown SD and going north to Oceanside.

Downtown & surrounding area

In Downtown and the surrounding area, there’s a bit of everything. In this area, you’ll find:

Gaslamp Quarter - Explore Victorian-era buildings filled with trendy shops, bars, and restaurants, offering a vibrant nightlife scene with craft beer aplenty.

Cabrillo National Monument - On Point Loma's cliffs, Cabrillo Monument offers history and ocean views. Explore the lighthouse, hike, and enjoy panoramic vistas.

Sunset Cliffs - Along Point Loma's edge, Sunset Cliffs dazzles with coastal beauty and stunning sunsets. Perfect for photos and relaxation by the sea. *Pro Tip* - If it is low tide, head down the stairs at the corner of Sunset Cliffs Blvd and Ladera St. At the bottom you'll find a beautiful beach at the base of the looming cliffs above.

Old Town - Immerse yourself in San Diego's history in Old Town, where adobe buildings, Mexican cuisine, and ghost tours await.

Little Italy - Experience the charm of Little Italy with authentic Italian food and trendy dining spots for brunch and dinner.

USS Midway Museum & Embarcadero - Explore the USS Midway, then stroll along the Embarcadero for picturesque views of San Diego Bay and a contemplative moment with fish tacos.

Seaport Village - Enjoy bayside shopping, saltwater taffy, and live music performances at Seaport Village.

Coronado Island & Hotel Del Coronado - Cross the Coronado Bridge to discover pristine beaches and timeless elegance at Hotel Del Coronado. Sip cocktails at the beachside bar while watching the sunset.

Balboa Park & San Diego Zoo/Safari Park - Explore museums, gardens, and the famous San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park. Hang out with wildlife, stroll through botanical gardens, and catch a play if you're feeling fancy.

SeaWorld, San Diego - Experience thrilling encounters with dolphins, whales, and sharks at SeaWorld. Don't miss the jaw-dropping aquatic shows!

**E&J Tip: If you're planning on spending any time in Downtown or the surrounding area, we recommend going west of Downtown to Point Loma to watch a sunset at Sunset Cliffs - it can get crowded, so head to 705 Cornish Dr Parking Lot to find more parking. After the sun goes down, head over to the Liberty Public Market for some after sunset snacks. This is one of our favorite evening activities!

Mission Beach & Pacific Beach

Just north of Downtown and the surrounding area is Mission Beach & Pacific Beach. These busy little classic SoCal beach towns have all the shops, cafés, rooftop bars, and people watching you could ever want on the Mission Beach & Pacific Beach Boardwalks.

Mission Bay & Belmont Park - Embrace your inner child at Belmont Park, where you can ride beach-side roller coasters, munch on ice cream, and challenge your friends to a game of mini-golf. Then, cool off with a dip in Mission Bay or catch some waves at the beach if you're feeling adventurous.

Bay Cruises - Experience the beauty of Mission Bay from a different perspective with a bay cruise. Hop aboard a boat tour and sail past picturesque islands, waterfront mansions, and serene marinas while soaking in the stunning scenery and gentle sea breeze.

**E&J Tip: rent some bikes and ride around Mission Bay, Fiesta Island, Mission Beach, and Pacific Beach boardwalks if you want to explore the area at a slower pace.

La Jolla

Where coastal charm meets laid-back luxury! Here, you'll find a treasure trove of attractions and activities to delight every traveler:

La Jolla Cove - Discover the enchanting beauty of La Jolla Cove, where dramatic cliffs, shimmering waters, and playful sea lions create a picture-perfect paradise. Whether you're strolling along the coastal trails, snorkeling among vibrant underwater gardens, or simply admiring the sunset from the iconic Children's Pool, La Jolla Cove is sure to capture your heart and leave you longing for more. *Make sure to be respectful and keep your distance from Sea lions and wildlife!

Blacks Beach - For the adventurous souls seeking a secluded slice of paradise, Blacks Beach beckons with its rugged beauty and clothing optional vibes. (You've been warned). Whether you're catching waves, basking in the sun, or simply enjoying the stunning coastal scenery, this hidden gem is sure to leave you feeling liberated and alive. *Also be aware: this secluded cliff-side beach does come with a price...loooots of stairs to get down LOL.

La Jolla Shores - Dive into the crystal-clear waters of La Jolla Shores, where gentle waves and pristine sands create the perfect setting for a day of beachside bliss. Whether you're snorkeling with colorful marine life, kayaking through sea caves, or simply lounging beneath the California sun, La Jolla Shores offers something for everyone to enjoy.

Gliderport - Take to the skies at the Gliderport, where adrenaline junkies and thrill-seekers come to fulfill their wildest dreams of flight. Whether you're hang gliding, paragliding, or simply watching the action from the ground, the Gliderport offers an exhilarating experience unlike any other. So strap in, hold on tight, and get ready to soar above the breathtaking cliffs of La Jolla!

**E&J Tip: If you're thinking of heading to La Jolla, we highly recommend visiting each of these locations! (Except for maybe Blacks Beach due to the clothing-optional-ness...unless that's your thing!) Also, breakfast/brunch at Caroline's Seaside Cafe is a favorite of ours :).

Del Mar

Dive into the upscale charm of Del Mar, where you can sip on cocktails at chic beachfront bars, indulge in some retail therapy at designer boutiques, go on hikes with incredible ocean views, and maybe even catch a horse race if you're feeling lucky. Our favorite things to do in Del Mar are:

Del Mar Racetrack - Feel the excitement of horse racing at Del Mar Racetrack, set against palm trees and ocean views. Whether betting on thoroughbreds, enjoying live music, or soaking in the atmosphere, a day at the races promises unforgettable thrills.

Tide Pooling at 15th Street - Discover marine wonders at 15th Street Beach during low tide. Explore tide pools filled with colorful sea creatures like hermit crabs and starfish. It's a fun and educational adventure for all ages.

**E&J Tip: If you're already in La Jolla or are heading to Del Mar, Torrey Pines and the Tide Pools are must-do's. Torrey Pines is in the Top Five places in San Diego for us, and is a great place to hike with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. The Tide Pools are a very unique experience, and at low tide will turn almost anyone into an amateur marine biologist. There's always something to see!

Encinitas

Encinitas can be best described as a coastal haven where surf culture, artistic vibes, and laid-back living collide. From surfing Swami's Beach to wandering the Meditation Gardens, in Encinitas you'll find:

Swami's Beach - Catch waves or bask in the sun at Swami's Beach, a legendary surf spot with stunning coastal vistas. Be aware, down the stairs is often a rocky beach - if you are looking to relax and enjoy the beach, we recommend Moonlight State Beach.

Self-Realization Fellowship Hermitage & Meditation Gardens - Explore lush botanical gardens and ocean views at the Meditation Gardens. Part of the "Self-Realization Fellowship", these small cliff-top Gardens are a favorite of ours in Encinitas!

**E&J Tip: After you've spent a day at an Encinitas beach or shopping in Downtown Encinitas, stop by Gelato 101 Encinitas or Baked Bear for our favorite Gelato or cookie ice cream sandwiches!

Carlsbad

Carlsbad is a charming coastal city known for its pristine beaches, family-friendly attractions, and laid-back atmosphere. Explore the quaint village area, indulge in farm-to-table cuisine, and enjoy endless outdoor adventures along its stunning Pacific coastline. Our favorites are:

Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park - Step back in time at Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, a hidden oasis showcasing the history of early California. Explore adobe structures, exotic gardens, and peacocks roaming the grounds.

**E&J Tip: If you're wanting to check out Carlsbad, we recommend starting your day with a leisurely breakfast at Naked Cafe, known for its delicious and healthy options with ocean views. Then, head over to Tamarack State Beach for a morning of sunbathing and beachcombing. Oceanside Beaches - Relax and play at Oceanside's pristine beaches, including "The Strand", Harbor Beach, Breakwater Way Beach, and South Oceanside Beach. Enjoy sun, surf, and coastal beauty.

**E&J Tip: If you're in Downtown O'Side, start your morning off with a coffee from Pier View Coffee, then head over to Parlor Doughnuts for a unique croissant-type doughnut (or two :) ). After, walk off that sugary snack with a stroll down the pier or on the boardwalk on The Strand (the road next to the sand). If doughnuts aren't your thing, we love getting breakfast at Hi/Lo at the Mission Pacific Hotel. Great food with and even better view! If you're hanging around for sunset, The Rooftop Bar (also at the Mission Pacific Hotel) is unmatched. (All of these activities are near the beaches on "The Strand".)
