Hiking
Hiking in Buena Vista, Colorado, offers an unforgettable experience for outdoor enthusiasts. Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Buena Vista is surrounded by the stunning peaks of the Sawatch Range, including several "14ers" (peaks over 14,000 feet). Please do not attempt to summit a 14er this time of year!
Beginner: The Barbara Whipple Trailhead, located just outside the Surf Hotel, provides easy access to a scenic loop trail that showcases the beauty of the Arkansas River and surrounding landscapes.
Moderate: Harvard Lakes Trail offers serene lakes and lush forests. The area is also home to the picturesque Midland Hill Trail, which rewards hikers with panoramic views of the Arkansas River Valley.
Whether you're seeking a strenuous climb or a leisurely walk, Buena Vista's diverse trails cater to all skill levels, making it a hiker's paradise.
St. Elmo
St. Elmo, located just outside Buena Vista in Nathrop, Colorado, is one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the state. Founded in 1880 during the mining boom, St. Elmo thrived with a bustling population and numerous businesses. Today, visitors can explore many of its original structures, including the general store, hotel, schoolhouse, and private residences. The town offers a fascinating glimpse into Colorado's rich mining history and is accessible year-round, making it a popular destination for history buffs and adventure seekers alike.
