“I swear I met you in the climbing gym… I was looking for my shoe size for my class and you had a Taylor Swift playlist on.”
“We did not meet.”
This is how Kathy and Luke, respectively, believe they met in college. Nonetheless, they still contributed to the 50% of Whitman College students who end up marrying each other when they met in Seattle through Lizzy Embury, who was in Kathy’s first-year section, and Luke’s cycling team.
The first time they met, Luke offered to make Kathy a Manhattan. However, because of Kathy's gnarly, infected second-degree motorcycle burn from her recent trip to Vietnam, she disclosed to the doctor-to-be that she was taking antibiotics and perhaps it would be ill-advised to drink alcohol. Luke, again, doctor-to-be, said "it's fine", and asked to examine Kathy's open wound. They proceeded to bond on their immaculate middle/high-school music taste of My Chemical Romance, Boys Like Girls, and Blink-182. And from here, a romance bloomed.
Between a rejection to an Of Monsters of Men concert due to Kathy's One Direction concert, another rejection to watch Crazy Stupid Love at Magnusen Park, and making cookies, they finally realized that they had mutual feelings for each other (after Lizzy exposed each other's secrets) (and after Kathy accidentally said "I love you" at the bar celebrating Luke's birthday).
Luke supported Kathy through her demanding Masters of Teaching, and Kathy (begrudgingly) supported Luke in his decision to *cough cough LEAVE HER* for Cincinnati to pursue his medical career. They tested their relationship spending a year doing long-distance, and 5 years living in Cincinnati, going through medical school, taking neurology exams while dancing to Go Noodle to motivate 8-year-olds to stay in class online.
It was NOT EASY.
During this time, they really understood what it meant to work for their relationship, and choose each other over and over again.
But of course, while their relationship was tested, they also found ways to nurture the relationship.
They raised 3 beautiful children (Pippin, Paladin, and Billie); they went on many international adventures, including Iceland, Turkey, Vietnam, and many US national parks; and built a home for themselves in Cincinnati and Detroit. They found ways to build each other up, learn from each other and from their amazing community, and enjoy their time together, despite all the challenges they faced.
To be entirely honest, they weren't entirely sure that they would make it to this day, but in the end, they are excited to celebrate with everyone who helped them move forward to choosing each other in the end. Everyone who is invited to this wedding believed in them, supported them, encouraged them, and now get to party with them!
Thank you everyone who supported us, and we are so thrilled for you to be there to celebrate our journey!
