Our Story

Once upon a Craigslist... It is a tale as old as time; two beautiful young women, desperately searching for partners in this crazy game we call the DC housing market. Katie and her roommate Ann needed someone to fill their open room; Allison needed a room that was close to the Capitol. So Allison moved into a Chinatown sunroom with no door - a steal for less than $1000/month! Over a year and eight months of roommateship, some warm feelings developed that had nothing to do with the easy Metro commute and apartment pool. The more logical of the pair (we'll let you guess who that one is) suggested that they wait until there were no messy complications before giving this a shot. Allison moved out August 1st. Their first date was August 8th. The rest, as they say, is history. (Don't worry, we didn't forget about Ann - she was so okay with it, she's our officiant!)

President Lincoln's Cottage is part of The President Lincoln and Soldiers’ Home National Monument, a 2.3 acre historic site in Northwest DC where Lincoln (and later presidents) spent their summers to escape the heat of downtown DC. The Cottage itself will be open for complimentary private tours during our cocktail hour, and guests will be able to see several rooms of the home, including where the Emancipation Proclamation was first drafted! Though not easily accessible by public transit, the Cottage does provide on-site parking for guests and can also be reached by any of DC's various ride-share apps (Uber, Lyft, etc.). Upon arrival, the guard at the entrance will check IDs against the list of guests, and drivers will be directed to the designated parking area. Want to take a closer look at the Cottage before the wedding? Discounted tours of President Lincoln's Cottage will be available the week before the wedding for our guests! Please email tour director Joan Cummins at jcummins@lincolncottage.org by October 15th and mention 'The Bates-Brice Wedding' for a discounted rate. We are so glad you will be celebrating our marriage with us! You might have a few questions about what the day is going to look like. That’s totally okay; every wedding is different! And whether this is your first gay wedding or your fiftieth (you’ve been to 50 gay weddings? How many gay people do you know?), here are some basic details about ours!

The venue is in a residential part of the city, and there aren't too many hotels nearby. An AirBnB will likely be nearer than a hotel room. If you'd prefer a hotel, you're welcome to book with the hotel block we have set up at the Generator located in the Dupont Circle neighborhood, a ~15 min drive/Uber away. The block is under "Kathryn Bates Wedding Block" if you call into the hotel. To book online, make sure to use the below link and book before October 7 to get our guaranteed rate.

Parking

If you are flying into Washington, DC, you might notice that there are three airports (Reagan National, Baltimore-Washington International, and Dulles) to choose from. However, only Reagan is close enough to DC to be accessible by taxi; BWI and Dulles all require a train or car to come into downtown DC. If you are not renting a car for your stay, we recommend flying into Reagan if possible. It'll be a bit more expensive, but it will save you some stress!

We are so excited to be having an outdoor tent reception! And though there will of course be a dance floor, the majority of the reception will be on grass. Please wear appropriate footwear and get excited for lawn games!

Accessibility

President Lincoln's Cottage is fully ADA accessible, with elevators available for all floors. There are numerous single-stall, gender-neutral bathrooms available for our use.&nbsp;There will be vegetarian and gluten-free options available for dinner. Please just let us know if this applies to you when you RSVP so we have a headcount. If you have different dietary needs, please text one of the brides and we will make it happen!
